COLUMBUS, Ohio – The fifth-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team won its 60th-consecutive match over a Big Ten opponent after defeating No. 41 Indiana, 7-0, Friday at The Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. Play was moved to the indoor facility because of thunderstorms in the area.
The Buckeyes (26-1; 7-0 Big Ten) remain in first place in the Big Ten and improve their all-time series record vs. the Hoosiers to 42-39. Under 11th-year head coach Ty Tucker, Ohio State is 10-2 against Indiana. Ohio State also improves its home win streak to 107 consecutive matches, moving to 18-0 at home this season. The 18 victories are the most home wins in a season in program history.
Sophomore Devin McCarthy clinched the Buckeyes’ 26th victory and 18th consecutive this season at No. 6 singles to stay perfect in dual competition. McCarthy, ranked 117th, defeated Maxime Armengaud, 7-5, 6-3, for his 11th-consecutive win in dual play this year.
Down, 5-2, in the doubles competition, senior co-captain Justin Kronauge and Balazs Novak were determined to maintain their undefeated record. The Buckeyes battled back to win six consecutive points, breaking Isade Juneau and Alexander van Gils three times during the stretch to win, 8-5, at No. 3 and claim the 17th-consecutive doubles point for Ohio State. The Buckeye pair is 13-0 overall with 12 wins at No. 3. With the victory, Kronauge is now in sole possession of second place on the all-time career wins list with 119 victories, passing former Buckeyes Ross Wilson (2003-06) and Drew Eberly (2005-08).
Juniors Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa cruised to an 8-2 victory vs. Santiago Gruter and Jeremy Langer at No. 2. The Buckeye duo remains at the top of the wins column on the team, improving to 17-9 overall.
At No. 1, sophomore Chase Buchanan and freshman Dino Marcan continued their dominance at the top of the lineup vs. 48th-ranked Lachlan Ferguson and Josh MacTaggart. Buchanan and Marcan, polled 16th in the country, won 8-5 to improve to a 9-1 this season. The Buckeyes have not lost a doubles match since March 3 vs. Simon Childs and Alejandro Calligari of Louisville.
In singles, Allare was the first to complete his match at No. 5, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Juneau. A native of Mason, Ohio, Allare becomes the fifth Buckeye this season to hit the 20-win mark. He is 20-4 overall, including a 17-2 record in dual competition. Marcan, No. 91 in the nation, only allowed one point in his match against Langer at No. 2 to put the Buckeyes within one point of putting away the Hoosiers. He won 6-0, 6-1 over Langer to improve to 21-5 in his first collegiate season at Ohio State.
At No. 3, No. 41 Kronauge became the second Buckeye in program history to hit the 140-win mark after downing Gruter 7-5, 6-3. He increases his win streak to a team-high 18 consecutive matches to improve to 29-3 overall. Kronauge has had at least 29 wins in each of his four Buckeye seasons. Novak followed his doubles partner with his 28th win of the year after downing MacTaggart 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. Novak improves his win streak to nine straight victories.
In Big Ten play, the Buckeyes are now a combined 19-2 in doubles and 40-2 in singles for the 2010 year.
Ohio State returns to the courts in its final regular-season home match vs. No. 17 Illinois at noon Sunday at Stickney Tennis Center. The match vs. the Illini is senior day with Kronauge and fellow co-captain Mike O’Connell being honored following play.
