Columbus, Ohio – The No. 5-ranked Ohio State wrestling team (10-6, 2-3) fell to No. 7 Illinois (10-3, 5-2) 21-15 Thursday on senior night at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes celebrated the careers of seniors 149 Josh Daugherty (Huber Heights, Ohio), 157 Keaton Anderson (Pickerington, Ohio), 184 Casey Kapustka (Centerville, Ohio) and 197 Anton Talamantes (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) prior to the beginning of the match.
Anderson, ranked No. 1 in his class, kicked off the dual as he met his third-straight ranked opponent in Illinois’ Alex Tirapelle, who sits at No. 7. Anderson took a 3-1 advantage into the third period before Tirapelle closed the gap to 3-2 with an escape with just over a minute remaining in the match. Tirapelle’s escape proved to be the final tally as Anderson concluded his home career with a victory to extend his current win streak to 17 matches.
The feature bout of the evening followed as Ohio State No. 4 John Clark (Jr., Canton, NY) faced No. 1 Matt Lackey in the 165-pound match. Clark looked to hand Lackey, 27-0 on the season, his first loss as he took a brief 2-point lead with a takedown, but Lackey scored a 2-point reversal to knot the match at 2-2 heading into the second period. Lackey carried a 3-2 edge into the third before Clark tied things up with an escape. The wrestlers traded a pair of takedowns in a flurry of action in the waning moments as the score was tied again at 5-5. Lackey scored a 2-pount reversal at the buzzer for the 7-5 victory to remain undefeated on the season and set the dual at a 3-3 stalemate.
The 174 match up featured another ranked bout as No. 6 Blake Kaplan (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) of Ohio State squared off against Illinois No. 7 Bryan Glynn. Kaplan held a 6-3 edge after a near pin in the second period and combined that with several scoring shots in the third period for the 12-5 decision and a 6-3 Buckeye lead.
The Illini tied the dual score for the second time on the evening after scoring a 3-point decision at 184, as the squads headed into another bout between ranked opponents at the 197-pound class between Ohio State No. 9 Talamantes (Sr., Fort Wayne, Ind.) and No. 16 Tyrone Byrd of Illinois.
Talamantes and Byrd scrapped to a 0-0 tie heading into the third period, before Byrd scored the first points of the match with a 1-point escape. Talamantes put two points on the scoreboard with a takedown with just 34 seconds left, but Byrd scored another escape and combined that with a riding time advantage for the tight 3-2 win and a 9-6 Illinois advantage.
Reigning national HWT champion Tommy Rowlands (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio) helped the Buckeyes recover from their first deficit of the match with a 29-10 technical fall as the Buckeyes jumped back out to an 11-9 lead. Rowlands’ 29 match points is a season-high as he claimed his 60th career dual win.
Illinois re-established its lead with wins in each of the 125 and 133 matches, setting the dual score at 18-11 following a major decision in the 125 bout and a technical fall at 133.
Ohio State junior No. 13 Jeff Ratliff (Jr., Marion, Ohio) attempted to bring the Buckeyes within striking distance as he faced Illinois’ No. 18 Cal Ferry at 141. Ratliff had Ferry on the verge of a fall in all three periods as he built a 15-5 lead en route to a 17-5 major decision win and slice the Illini lead to just three heading in the final match of the dual.
The match culminated in the decisive 149-pound match as Ohio State’s Daugherty, who lifted the Buckeyes to victory earlier this season with a pin in the final match at West Virginia, met Tony Pedrosa of Illinois. 13th-ranked Daugherty wrestled Pedrosa to a 2-2 stalemate after the first period, before he tallied a 2-point reversal in the final moments of the second stanza for the 4-2 advantage. Pedrosa tied the score at 4-4 with a takedown as the match headed to overtime, where Pedrosa tallied another takedown to claim the 3-point decision and the 21-15 upset for the Illini.
The Buckeyes concluded their home slate with the loss to Illinois and travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the No. 10 Wolverines of Michigan Sunday at 2 p.m. The dual versus UM is the first of three-consecutive road meets to end the regular season.
