DURHAM, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Ohio State field hockey recorded its first NCAA tournament victory in program history with a 3-1 win over No. 12 California in a first round game Saturday in Durham, N.C. Junior Yesinia Luces scored a pair of goals to advance the Buckeyes to the second round where they will face host team Duke at 2 p.m. Sunday. Ohio State improves to 15-3 while Cal finishes the season with a 16-5 record.

“I’m really proud of our team,” Anne Wilkinson, Ohio State head coach said. “They came on the field today with a lot of energy and it showed in their performance. Our basic fundamentals were right on and the team really worked together to produce an amazing game. I know they will carry this energy into their game tomorrow and do great things.”

Ohio State opened with a goal just 1:28 into the game for an early 1-0 lead. Luces (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent) scored from right in front of the Cal cage unassisted for her first of two goals in the game.

The Buckeyes upped their lead to 2-0 at 25:10 when junior Jamie Gofgosky (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon Central) knocked in a pass from classmate Michaela O’Malley (Stow, Mass./Notre Dame Academy). The goal was Gofgosky’s fourth of the season while O’Malley picked up her third assist.

Ohio State held its two-goal lead into the first intermission with a 6-3 advantage in shots and 2-1 edge in penalty corners.

The Buckeyes controlled the ball the opening minutes of the second half, California took a timeout at 56:08 prior to a penalty corner. When play continued, the Bears fired the ball twice at the OSU cage, but freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) saved both shots to maintain the score are 2-0. Just minutes later, Luces scored her second goal of the game from the right corner at 59:55 on a pass from sophomore Linda Haussener (Baden, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Baden) to increase to OSU lead to 3-0. The goal was her 13th at the season and marked her fourth game this season with multiple goals. Haussener tallied her 11th assist of the season.

The lone goal for the Golden Bears was scored by Andrea Lo at 64:07 with an assist by Valentina Godfrid for a final score of 3-1.

Quintiliani finished the game with three saves to improve to 15-3 this season. It was the ninth time she has held a team to one goal or less. Bears keeper Veronica Sykes had two saves.

Overall, Ohio State outshot Cal 15-8. Both teams had five penalty corners.
