COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State women’s golf team won the 2002 Big Ten Championship Sunday with a team score of 1,220 (+68). The event was hosted by Illinois at the Par 72 Stone Creek Golf Course (6,215) in Urbana, Ill. Rounds three and four were played Sunday after the third round Saturday was postponed. The Buckeyes bested second place Purdue by ten strokes.

OSU shot scores of 317 in both the third and fourth rounds Sunday. The second round team score of 289 Saturday was the lowest of the tournament for the Buckeyes.

Junior captain Mollie Fankhauser (Dublin, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) earned medalist honors for the second straight year with a composite 304. Fankhauser’s 68 in the second round tied a Stone Creek Golf Course record and was the lowest round by an individual in the tournament.

Lindsay Knowlton shot 306 to finish fifth while Kristen White tied for seventh with a score of 310 and Allison Hanna shot, finishing in a tie for 10th place.

In conference awards given out at the conclusion of the event, White was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year while Therese Hession was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. Michigan State’s Emily Bastel was named Player of the Year.

Fankhauser, White, Natalie Aber (Sr., Akron, Ohio/Springfield) and Ashley Lowery (Sr., West Lafayette, Ind./Kansas) were four of ten players named to the All-Tournament team following the event.

Ohio State will return to action at the NCAA Regional competition hosted by Michigan State May 9-11.
