COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State rowing team qualified five of six boats for the Grand Finals during the preliminary and semifinal rounds at the 2005 Aramark South/Central Regional Championships Saturday at Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The finals session of the regional championships will begin Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Buckeyes finished first in five of their six heats in the morning session. In the afternoon, two of the three boats finished first in their respective heats.

“It was a great day of racing,” Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said. “We faced a lot of challenges today with lightning delays and how deep the field has become, but it was a very exciting day. Both varsity eight boats had good races, but we realize that the other boats will bring a tremendous amount of speed tomorrow. It’s exciting to see how it will all play out.”

The first varsity eight finished first in Heat 1 with a time of 6:29.60, the fastest time in the varsity eight heats from the morning session. In the semifinals, Ohio State posted the best time of the afternoon (6:30.1) to take first place and qualify for the Grand Finals. OSU defeated Tennessee (6:31.31), Michigan (6:37.79), Louisville (6:40.95), Notre Dame (6:42.71) and Central Florida (6:46.40). The Buckeyes will race in lane 4 of the Grand Finals at 11:20 a.m. Sunday.

The second varsity eight placed first in Heat 2 of the morning session with a time of 6:45.0. Ohio State continued its success into the afternoon winning semifinal 1 with a time of 6:55.20, to qualify for the Grand Finals. The Buckeyes defeated Michigan (6:59.44), Notre Dame (7:01.53), Texas (7:04.41), Duke (7:14.43) and Indiana (7:15.67). OSU will race in lane 4 of the Grand Finals at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The first varsity four finished third in Heat 1 with a time of 7:35.50, qualifying the Buckeyes for the semifinals. In the afternoon race the four boat placed fourth with a time of 7:57.9 to qualify for the Petite Final. The boat was topped by Virginia (7:42.8), Michigan (7:56.5) and Notre Dame (7:56.9). OSU will race in lane 3 of the Petite Finals at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The second varsity four took first place in Heat 1 of the Open Four in the morning session with a time of 7:37.80 to automatically qualify for the Grand Finals. The boat defeated Miami (8:11.99), Kansas (8:17.45), Clemson (8:35.63) and Duke (9:05.46). The second four is set to compete in lane 3 of the Grand Finals at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The first novice eight finished first in Heat 2 of the morning session at 6:58.30, which automatically qualified OSU for the Grand Final. The Buckeyes will race in lane 4 of the Grand Finals at 10:20 a.m. Sunday.

The second novice eight only competes in the Grand Finals of the regional championships. The Buckeyes will race in lane 2 of the Grand Finals at 9:50 a.m. Sunday.
