KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 4 Ohio State men’s hockey team fell to Western Michigan, 5-1, Friday at Lawson Arena. The Buckeyes fall to 2-2-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Broncos improve to 1-2 and 1-0 in league play.
The teams will end the two-game series at 7:35 p.m. Saturday in Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.
There was no scoring in the first period. Ohio State outshot the Broncos, 10-4, and each team was 0-for-3 on the power play.
The Buckeyes ended the second period down, 3-0. WMU got on the board 1:17 into the period, when Mike Erickson scored a power-play goal, set up by Paul Szczechura and Ryan Mahrle. The Broncos’ Jeff Pierce scored an unassisted goal at 14:18. With the Buckeyes killing off a 5-minute major, Szczechura scored a power-play goal at 15:52 to put WMU ahead by three. OSU had 14 shots in the period, the Broncos seven.
Western scored the first two goals of the third period. Jeff Lovecchio scored shorthanded at 8:12, followed by an Erickson power-play tally at 10:38. Andrew Schembri (Jr., Mississauga, Ontario) broke up the shutout at 15:13, assisted by Dave Barton (Jr., Calgary, Alberta). The Buckeyes outshot the Broncos in the period, 13-5.
The Buckeyes put 37 shots on net and held the Broncos to 16. Dave Caruso (Sr., Roswell, Ga.) started the game in net for the Buckeyes, playing the first 35:52, allowing three goals and making five saves. Ian Keserich (So., Parma, Ohoi) played the final 24:08, making six saves and allowing two goals. Daniel Bellissimo made 36 saves in 60 minutes in
Ohio State was scoreless on 12 power play chances. Western Michigan was 3-for-9. Game Notes The Buckeyes have outshot their opponents in all five games this season, holding each team to 25 or less shots. The Broncos had a Buckeye opponent season-low 16 shots on net.
The five goals allowed by the Buckeyes were the most since Michigan State downed the Buckeyes, 6-3, Feb. 18, 2005. OSU had held its first opponents to two goals or less in each of the first four games this season.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Buckeyes against Western Michigan. After a 6-3 loss Oct. 29, 2004, the Buckeyes posted a 5-2 win in game two of the series in Kalamazoo. OSU swept the series in Columbus Jan. 28-29, with 4-3 and 7-0 wins.
