KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Buckeye junior defenseman Sean Collins scored twice and sophomore Sam Campbell added two assists, but the No. 4 Ohio State men’s hockey team fell to Western Michigan, 5-4, Saturday at Lawson Arena. The Buckeyes led, 4-1, late in the second period, but WMU scored twice in the last 1:01 of the second and twice in the third for the win.

Ohio State falls to 2-3-1 on the year and 1-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Broncos improve to 2-2 and 2-0 in league play. The victory gives the Broncos a two-game sweep of the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes opened the scoring 3:06 into the game, when John Dingle (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) took a pass from Kyle Hood (So., Osoyoos, British Columbia) and slid the puck by Bronco goalie Daniel Bellissimo for his second goal of the season. Sam Campbell (So., Hamilton, Ontario) had the second assist on the goal. Western Michigan tied the game at 14:33 on Brent Walton’s unassisted power-play goal. Ohio State had 12 shots in the period, the Broncos nine.

The teams combined for five goals in the second period. The Buckeyes built the lead to 4-1 before the Broncos scored twice on the power play in the last 1:01 to end the period with Ohio State ahead, 4-3. Collins (Jr., Troy, Mich.) scored his first of two goals in the period 5:06 into the stanza, assisted by Matt McIlvane (So., Naperville, Ill.). The Buckeyes then scored twice in 33 seconds. Jason DeSantis (So., Oxford, Mich.) tallied at 16:20, assisted by Zach Pelletier (China Village, Maine). Collins added his second score at 16:53, assisted by Campbell, as he backhanded in a loose puck. The Broncos scored twice in 50 seconds. Jeff Pierce scored a 5-on-3 goal at 18:59, followed by Nathan Ansell’s 5-on-4 score. The Buckeyes put 17 shots on net in the period, the Broncos six. The Broncos tied the game 10:18 into the third period when Jason Moul scored off a bad bounce off of the boards in the Buckeye end. Dave Krisky scored the gamewinner at 17:07 on the power play. OSU had 12 shots on goal, WMU five.

Ian Keserich (So., Parma, Ohio) played 58:54 in net for the Buckeyes, making 15 saves on 20 Bronco shots. Daniel Bellissimo had 37 saves on 41 Buckeye chances in 59:48.

Ohio State did not score on seven power-play chances, while the Broncos converted four times on eight chances.

Game Notes
The Buckeyes return to action with a home-and-home series with Miami. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday in Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio, and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena in Columbus. Note the gametime for the home game has been changed.

Keserich started the game for the Buckeyes, marking his first start since Dec. 11, 2004 at Clarkson.

Pelletier was playing in his first game since Oct. 10, 2004. His assist marked the first point of his career.

Freshman Corey Elkins saw his first action as a Buckeye

Collins’ two goals set a career best. He had 13 games with one goal in his first 86 games as a Buckeye.

Campbell’s assists were the first of his career and were his first points since Nov. 14, 2004 vs. Northern Michigan.

The Buckeyes were last swept in a two-game series Jan. 23-24, 2004 at Michigan State. The last time the squad was swept on the road was Jan. 9-10, 2004 at Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
