COLUMBUS, Ohio – Multiple wins by seven different Buckeyes helped Ohio State pick up a pair of dual victories on Tuesday evening in the first Thanksgiving Throwdown, hosted at Kent State’s Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. The Buckeyes, ranked fourth in this week’s USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, improve to 3-0 on the season.
Reigning Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Kyle Snyder followed up his victory last Saturday over fourth-ranked Tanner Hall of Arizona State with two pins on Tuesday in a combined 3:46. It was just the second and third career falls for Snyder, who has now won 14 straight matches dating back to last January and improved his career record to 43-4.
Fellow defending national champion Myles Martin improved to 6-0 on the young season with his third and fourth bonus point wins. He pinned Kent State’s Jerold Spohn in 2:08 and then turned around to tech fall Nick Corba, 24-9. Against Cobra, Martin scored eight takedowns.
Micah Jordan, who came into Tuesday’s duals as the team leader in wins (nine), bonus point wins (seven) and technical falls (four) added to all three of those categories. Jordan scored a total of 44 points and won each of his bouts via technical fall. Jordan was a 26-6 winner over Tim Rooney of Kent State and followed that up with an 18-3 victory against Nick Montgomery of Cleveland State.
Jose Rodriguez built off the momentum of last Saturday’s 13-0 major decision at 125 lbs. by getting a technical fall and fall tonight. Rodriguez shutout Beard Seth of Kent State, 16-0, and needed just 1:26 to pin Spencer Dusi of Cleveland State. The redshirt freshman from Massillon, Ohio is now 5-1 on the season.
Kollin Moore improved to 10-0 on the year with two bonus point wins – a 21-4 technical fall against Stephen Suglio of Kent State a pin in 1:22 over Kollin Kelly of Cleveland State. Moore’s pin vs. Kelly was one of six against the Vikings on the night.
Ke-Shawn Hayes was the first Buckeye to win on the night, picking up a 7-3 decision over Cleveland State’s Evan Cheek. After finishing the first period with a 2-1 lead, Hayes escaped to start the second and then scored a takedown and two-point near fall for all the points he needed. In his second match of the night, Hayes picked up his first fall of the year.
The seventh Buckeye win two wins on the night was Cody Burcher, who edged Isaac Best of Kent State 5-2 to close out the 36-13 win over the Golden Flashes and pinned John Vaughn of Cleveland State two minutes into the first period.
In all, Ohio State won 17 of 20 matches and had nine falls, five technical falls and one major decision. The Buckeyes are now off until the CKLV Las Vegas Invite Dec. 2-3 in Las Vegas, Nev.
