COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4- ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team notched a 7-0 win over Illinois Friday in a Big Ten Conference match. The Buckeyes improve to 22-2 and 8-0 in conference play, while the Fighting Illini fall to 11-11 and 5-3 in the Big Ten. The win, the Buckeyes’ eight in a row this season, was the 20th straight victory for Ohio State in a Big Ten regular season match.
“That was a very competitive Illinois team,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “I thought we played well tonight and it was great to get another outdoor match. We need to keep focusing on a few things and be ready to go for Northwestern on Sunday.”
The Buckeyes clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Francesca Di Lorenzo, Anna Sanford, Miho Kowase, Ferny Angeles Paz, Sandy Niehaus and Olivia Sneed all posted straight set singles win to help secure the sweep against Illinois.
Kowase’s singles victory was the 104th of her Buckeye career, tying Kristy Dascoli (1998-01) for most career singles wins by a Buckeye. She is 19-0 this spring and 27-3 overall this year.
In doubles, the No. 26 duo of sophomore Di Lorenzo and Kowase was the first off the court after topping Ines Vias and Louise Kwong, 6-1, on court one. The Buckeyes’ pair of Sneed and Niehaus notched a 6-4 win over Alexis Casati and Daniela Pedraza Novak on court three to clinch the doubles point and give the team the 1-0 advantage going into singles. On court two, the tandem of Sanford and Angeles Paz was down 5-3 to Madie Baillon and Jaclyn Switke when play was abandoned.
Sneed posted the first singles win on court six after downing Grace Tapak, 6-0, 6-1. No. 51 Sanford topped Casati, 6-2, 6-3, on court two for the next singles win. The win marked her seventh a row. No. 89 Niehaus defeated Pedraza Novak, 6-2, 6-4, on court five to secure the team win, and pick up her 13th consecutive victory.
No. 88 Kowase notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over Baillon on court three to extend her winning streak to 19. No. 1 Di Lorenzo posted a 6-2, 6-3 win, her 13th win a row, over Kwong on court one. After battling from being down in the first set to Switke, No. 117 Angeles Paz came back to win the set in a tiebreaker, 7-5, and claimed the second set, 6-2, to secure the singles sweep. Paz’s match was completed indoors because of rain.
Di Lorenzo, Niehaus and Angeles Paz are all 18-1 in singles this season.
Up next, the Buckeyes will travel to Evanston, Ill., to take on No. 36 Northwestern Sunday at noon ET. Both teams enter the match 8-0 in B1G play. Follow along: Live scoring | Live video (indoor only; $)
