ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team used a four-goal second period to cruise to victory over the St. Cloud State Huskies, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
After a scoreless first, the Buckeyes (6-0-1, 4-0-1 WCHA) kicked things into gear in the second. Emma Maltais got the ball rolling by netting her fourth goal of the season, putting OSU ahead 1-0 at the 4:39 mark. A little over two minutes later Maddy Field lit the lamp for the fifth time this season, making it a 2-0 game. Later in the period, Rebecca Freiburger got in on the action, scoring her first goal of the season to extend the Ohio State lead, 3-0. Not to be outdone, co-captain Lauren Spring added to the OSU lead with her first goal of the season, giving Ohio State a 4-0 lead before the second intermission.
OSU put 12 more pucks on net in the third, but none tickled the twine, as the Buckeyes went on to win 4-0. Kassidy Sauvé picked up her third shutout of the season, making 26 saves on the afternoon. As a team, the Buckeyes had a season high 48 shots on goal, led by Maltais and Field’s nine each.
Field’s goal was her third in three straight games, and she’s on a four-game point streak after tallying an assist at Minnesota on October, 7. OSU Head Coach Nadine Muzerall spoke touched on how Field’s scoring continues to be a catalyst for the Buckeye’s success after the game. “It’s comforting to have the depth that we have, it’s not always going to be Maddy putting the pucks in, but she’s been playing really well lately, and she was the MVP today. She got us going with her forecheck, and she was always somewhere, making plays that don’t always appear on the stat sheet.”
The Buckeyes return to action tomorrow for their series finale with the Huskies. Puck drop is set for 3:37 p.m. ET.
