COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s tennis lost a heartbreaking match to Indiana, 4-2, at the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday. The Buckeyes record drops to 13-10, 7-5 in the Big Ten and Indiana’s improves to 16-5, 8-3 in the Big Ten.
“It was a tough fought match,” head coach Ty Tucker said. “Indiana played well. They got past the doubles point and didn’t look back. They won some tiebreakers and some tight sets. They deserved to win. They are a good team at home. We are going to have to play 25 to 30 percent better then them to if we are going to them at their home place.”
Ohio State, for the 16th time this season out of 21 matches, won the doubles point to a team that has two ranked doubles duos. Ohio State’s Derek DeFalco (Jr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and Bob Wellstein (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) led the Buckeyes in doubles with a quick win over George McGill and Milan Rakvica, 8-2, at the No. 2 position. With the win DeFalco holds the No. 2 position on single season doubles wins. Phil Metz (Fr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Jon Scale (Fr., Actworth, Ga./Harrison) came up big for the Buckeyes with a win over Paul Jacobson and Rahman Smiley, 8-5, at the No. 3 position.
DeFalco had the lone singles win for Ohio State at the No. 6 position over Rahman Smiley in a tough three-set match (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Buckeye Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) was leading Ian Arons, 7-6(4), 3-6, 2-0, when the match was halted. Indiana’s Jacobson had the match-winning point over Wellstein, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
