COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 30th-ranked Ohio State women’s swimming team improved to 3-0 on the season in dual meets with a hard-fought, come-from-behind 161-133 win over a fine Toledo team Saturday at the UT Student Rec Center Pool.
Senior diver Chelsea Davis led a one-two Ohio State finish on both the one- and three-meter springboard events with winning scores – Bianca Alvarez was second on both boards – and freshman Megan Detro won both sprint freestyle events to lead the Buckeyes over a determined Toledo team that is now 8-2 on the season.
“Toledo came into the meet undefeated in the MAC, receiving votes in the latest CSCAA poll and brimming with confidence,” Ohio State coach Bill Dorenkott, who coached his 100th collegiate dual meet, said. “They were at home with the meet being carried on television. They were a formidable opponent.”
The Rockets swam to victory in five of the first six races to build a 64-48 lead. Freshman Emily Creran’s win in the 100 backstroke in 58.30 was the only win for the Scarlet and Gray early.
But Detro’s first win of the meet – the 50 free in 23.56 – started a string of four consecutive Ohio State wins, including Davis’ win on the 1-meter diving event. After the break for the diving, Detro came back with a win in the 100 free in 51.29 and Jill Lockhart led a 1-2-3 Ohio State finish in the 200 backstroke with a winning time of 2:05.00.
Lockhart’s win gave Ohio State its first lead of the afternoon at 96-87.
The Buckeyes then closed out the meet with wins in four of the final five events. Samantha Cheverton (500 freestyle in 4:53.67) and Shannon Draves (100 butterfly in 56.86) were victorious as was Davis on the three-meter board with 337.30 points.
Detro, Cheverton, Anita Beck and Haley Mitchell then closed out the meet with a win in the 400 free relay.
The Buckeyes’ busy weekend isn’t over. The team returns home to host Wright State in a double dual meet with the men’s team at 1 p.m. Sunday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
