Columbus, Ohio – The third-ranked (tie) Ohio State (17-3 overall, 10-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 28-26) decision at No. 14 UC San Diego Thursday night in RIMAC Arena. The defeat stopped a 17-match Buckeye winning streak. OSU’s John Klanac recorded a match-high 25 points with 24 kills (.415) and one ace serve. Mik Berzins added 13 points with 13 kills (.158) for the Buckeyes. Triton Carl Eberts posted a team-high 19 points with 14 kills (.310), one ace serve, two solo and four assists blocks. Calvin Ross contributed 13.5 points with nine kills (.533), one ace serve, one solo and five assist blocks for UC San Diego.
Tied at eight in set one, three UC San Diego errors and a Jason Tobkin–Grayson Overman block gave Ohio State a 12-8 lead. Eberts, with a kill, made it 12-9. Kills from Tobkin and Klanac gave Ohio State a 14-9 lead. The Tritons trailed, 18-16, when an OSU error and an Eberts solo block cut the lead to one at 18-17. At 21-20, OSU, a Steven Kehoe–Kevin Heine block and an ace serve from Klanac gave the Buckeyes a 23-20 lead. OSU reached set point at 24-20 with a kill from Klanac. A Buckeye error stopped the set point at 24-21. A Triton error ended the set, giving Ohio State a 25-21 win and a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .433 in the set to .219 for UC San Diego.
The second set saw six lead changes and 13 ties. UC San Diego held an 11-9 lead when a four-point Buckeye run began with kills from Overman and Heine. A Triton error and an ace serve from Overman made it 13-11 OSU. An OSU error made it 13-12. Kills from Tobkin and Klanac and two UC San Diego errors gave OSU a 17-12 lead. Two OSU errors, two Triton blocks and a Ross ace serve tied the set at 17. At 18-all, an Eberts kill, a Phil Bannan ace serve and an OSU error gave UC San Diego a 21-18 lead. Two kills from Berzins and a Shawn Sangrey ace serve tied the set at 21. Two Buckeye errors and an ace serve from Eberts gave the Tritons set point at 24-21. A UC San Diego error stopped the set point at 24-22. The Tritons won the set, 25-22, off an OSU error to tie the match at one set each. Ohio State hit .097 for the set to .000 for the Tritons.
With the third set tied at eight, a Joel Davidson solo block and his kill and a Shane Veiga kill gave UC San Diego an 11-8 lead. The Tritons expanded the lead to five at 21-16 before two Klanac kills forced a Triton time out at 21-18. A Veiga kill and a UC San Diego error made it 22-19. Klanac, with a kill and a Triton error cut the lead to one at 22-21. An Eberts kill and an Eberts-Ross block gave the Triton set point at 24-21. A Klanac kill stopped the set point at 24-22. UC San Diego, with a kill from Ross, won the set, 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Tritons hit .353 for the set to .241 for Ohio State.
Ohio State opened the fourth set with kills from Berzins and Klanac and a Triton error for a 3-0 lead. A Davidson kill, a Triton error and a kill by Berzins made it 5-1 OSU. UC San Diego trailed, 12-7, when kills from Sebastian Brady and Eberts and an OSU error made it 12-10. The Triton run continued with a Bannan ace serve and an Eberts solo block to tie the set at 12. At 14-all, kills from Heine and Klanac gave Ohio State a 16-14 lead. A Brady-Veiga block made it 16-15. Kills from Klanac and Tobkin and a Triton error opened a 19-15 OSU lead. A kill from Ross, a Bannan solo block and a Veiga ace serve cut the margin to one at 19-18. Errors by both teams and a kill from Ross tied the set at 20. Tied at 23, a Brady kill gave UC San Diego match point at 24-23. A Triton error tied the set at 24. A Veiga kill gave UC San Diego a second match point at 25-24. A Klanac kill stopped the match point at 25-all. The Tritons earned a third match point with a Davidson kill at 26-25. Klanac, with a kill, stopped the match point at 26-all. UC San Diego had a fourth match point with a Davidson kill at 27-26. The Tritons, with a Bannan-Ross block, won the set, 28-26, to win the match, 3-1. The Tritons hit .316 for the set to .205 for Ohio State.
In the match, UC San Diego hit .244 to Ohio State’s .240. OSU had a 55-48 margin in kills and a 51-46 edge in assists. OSU’s Kehoe posted a match-high 48 assists while Triton Bannan recorded 41. UC San Diego posted 11 ace serves to five for Ohio State. Bannan recorded a match-high three for the Tritons. UC San Diego gave up 17 service errors to 16 for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ohio State had a 52-41 advantage in digs with OSU’s Kehoe and Triton Chase Frishman sharing match-high honors with 13 each. UC San Diego had a 16.5 to four margin in team blocks. Sharing match-high honors with six total blocks each were Eberts (two solo, four assists), Ross (one solo, five assists) and Brady (six assists) for the Tritons.
Ohio State continues play in California at 6 p.m. PT Saturday when they play at fifth-ranked UC Irvine (12-11, 9-8 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).
