COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 seed Ohio State field hockey team (13-6; 4-2 Big Ten) defeated the No. 6 seed Northwestern Wildcats (9-9; 1-5 Big Ten), 3-2, Friday in the first round of the 2003 Big Ten Tournament in University Park, Pa. Forward Vanessa Immordino (Sr.; West Essex, N.J.), defenseman Cammie Trainer (Jr.; Hudson, Ohio) and forward Curlyne Wynn (Fr.; Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago) each posted a goal to help the Buckeyes advance to semifinal action.

The Buckeyes advanced to the semifinal round of play where they will face No. 2 seed Michigan State at 2 p.m. Saturday on Bigler Field in University Park Pa. This marks the seventh consecutive year OSU has won its first round game in the Big Ten tournament.

The game remained scoreless until late in the first half, when Immordino scored a short-handed goal assisted by midfielder Lucy Clayton (Jr.; Scarborough, England) at 28:25. OSU’s Saskia Muller (Fr.; Zurich, Switzerland) received a yellow card at the 26:26 mark, forcing the Buckeyes to be down one player. The Buckeyes, nonetheless were able to fire a shot at the back of the net for a goal.

The Buckeyes immediately extended their 1-0 halftime lead in the second half with two goals. Wynn posted her seventh goal of the year at the 34:22 mark, with Immordino assisting. Trainer recorded her third goal this season with 32:45 on the clock. Northwestern was able to close the gap on OSU’s lead, as Candace Cooper scored at 42:45. The Wildcats cut the Buckeye lead to 3-2 off a penalty corner at the 8:42 mark by Diane Provencher, but was unable to get any closer. Ohio State ended the game with 10 shots, compared to 17 shots for Northwestern. Buckeye goalkeeper, Lindsay Williams (So.; Harrisburg, Pa.) recorded 10 saves, while Wildcat goalie Sherri-Anne Nyberg tallied five.

The last time the Buckeyes faced the Spartans was Oct. 31in East Lansing, Mich., where it fell, 5-0. The Buckeyes are 31-11-3 all-time against the Spartans. OSU is 1-0 in postseason action. MSU defeated No. 7 seed Indiana Friday to advance to the semifinals.
