Columbus, Ohio – The No. 3 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team will open up the 2017 slate in Chicago at the 47th annual Windy City Invitational Saturday evening. The meet will start at 8:30 p.m. ET at the UIC Pavilion.
The Buckeyes will be competing against five other teams, four of which are ranked inside the top 10 of the College Gymnastics Association preseason poll: No. 4 Minnesota, No. 5 Illinois, No. 7 Iowa and No. 10 Michigan. The host institution, UIC, is ranked No. 17. This will be the first of eight meets before the Big Ten Championships (April 7-8) take place in Champaign, Ill.
Gymnasts to Watch
Martin and Burke were named Gymnasts to Watch for the 2017 season. Martin, a redshirt senior, is poised to have a strong comeback year; he only competed in three meets in 2016 before an injury sidelined him for the season. Martin is a two-time All-American (2014 all-around and vault), and he was named to the 2014 All-Big Ten First Team in the midst of capturing a title on the vault.
Burke represented the Buckeyes on the floor exercise, rings and vault at the 2016 NCAA Championships as a freshman. The Royse City, Texas native was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after winning the all-around competition in his college debut at the Windy City Invitational becoming the first Buckeye to win that event since Randy Monohan (2004).
Adjusted Scoring System
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has adjusted the Code of Points following the 2016 Olympics. From 2017 through the 2020 Olympics, the max score for all events, with the exception of the vault (.4 lower), will be .5 lower than the 2013-16 scoring system.
