COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 Ohio State men’s tennis team finished out its doubleheader home opener with a 7-0 victory against Xavier Wednesday at the Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Buckeyes have never lost their opening-day doubleheader matches under head coach Ty Tucker.
“It’s nice to get back to playing,” Tucker said. “We have a lot of work to do to get ready for a tough next weekend for the ITA Team Indoor qualifier, but I’m happy with the way we played today.”
The former Buckeye owns an opening-day record of 22-0 since taking over the helm 11 years ago (Ohio State traditionally plays two matches on opening day). The Scarlet and Gray is now 9-0 against Xavier and has a 17-3 record against teams from the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The Buckeyes swept the Musketeers to claim the doubles point. At No. 1, sophomore Chase Buchanan and senior co-captain Justin Kronauge cruised pass Patrick Bandy and Chris Herrlinger, winning 8-2. The Buckeye pair is now 4-3 this season.
Freshman Dino Marcan and Balazs Novak defeated Anthony Palmenter and Brian Starr, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. The duo improves to 4-0 overall with the doubles point clincher.
At No. 3 doubles, junior Shuhei Uzawa and sophomore Steven Williams finished out play against Phillip Diaz and J.T. Torbeck, winning, 8-4. It was the first time Williams and Uzawa paired together in their careers as Buckeyes.
In singles, Buchanan, a native of New Albany, Ohio, won his first match in dual play of the 2010 season. Buchanan defeated Herrlinger at No. 1 in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Kronauge followed with his own straight-set victory at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-1 against Richard Canelas. The senior co-captain, who now has 116 victories in his career, ties former Buckeye Devin Mullings (2003-07) for fifth on the all-time career singles wins list.
At No. 3 singles, No. 34 Uzawa claimed the second win of the day for Ohio State, downing Bandy 6-1, 6-2. Uzawa is now 8-4 in singles this year. At No. 6 singles, Williams improved his winning streak to six-consecutive matches after defeating Starr 6-3, 6-0.
Junior Balazs Novak downed Torbeck 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Novak is 8-3 overall this season and 2-0 in dual action. Closing out competition for Ohio State was sophomore Devin McCarthy at No. 5 singles. McCarthy won 6-1, 6-2 against MacDonald to complete the Buckeyes’ perfect day in singles and doubles. He is now 7-2 overall this year.
Ohio State will next compete at the 2010 ITA Kickoff Weekend Jan. 30-31 at the Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Buckeyes will take on New Mexico at 10 a.m. to begin the event.
