HOUSTON – The No. 4 Texas Longhorns out-hit No. 26 Ohio State 8-3 and used a three-run second inning on their way to a 6-0 blanking of the Buckeyes in Ohio State’s season opener Friday in the Minute Maid College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
Texas took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. A throwing error by Buckeye pitcher Josh Newman (Sr., Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) on a bunt by Drew Stubbs led to the first Longhorn run and put two runners in scoring position. The error allowed Taylor Teagarden to score from second after he led off the inning with a double. Michael Hollimon followed Teagarden’s double with a walk before the bunt to Newman. Newman battled back to strike out Seth Johnston but a single through the left side by J.D. Reininger scored Hollimon and then a sacrifice bunt by Nathan Warrick brought home Stubbs for the 3-0 lead after two innings.
The Longhorns added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase their lead to 4-0. Newman walked the first two batters of the inning before a fielding error by first baseman Paul Farinacci (Jr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura Hills) on a bunt by Johnston down the first-base line loaded the bases for Reninger. Renginger sent a shot to Brett Garrard (Sr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) at shortstop and after a bobbled throw could not get an out. The third error on the Buckeyes allowed Texas to take a four-run lead.
Texas added a run in the sixth inning thanks to a single over the infield into left field to score Johnston. A solo home run by Reninger in the eighth inning off a 2-0 offering from Buckeye reliever Jeffrey Carroll (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) built the Longhorn lead to the final six-run margin of victory. Reninger was 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Six other Longhorns had one hit apiece as Texas out-hit the Buckeyes 8-3.
The Buckeyes had just one runner in scoring position the entire game, but could not get the runner to third base in the fourth inning. Trailing 3-0, the Buckeyes sent Rabin on a tag from second on a fly out to centerfield by Steve Caravati (Jr., Dover, Ohio/Dover). Mike Rabin (Jr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) had two hits to lead Ohio State.
Justin Simmons picked up his second win (2-0) of the season for the Longhorns, which improved to 7-0 on the year. Simmons went five innings, allowed two hits and struck out three with one walk. After Simmons left the game at the end of the fifth inning, Texas relievers retired the next 12 batters before Rabin broke up the string with a single to shallow right-centerfield off Longhorn closer Huston Street.
Newman got the loss as he and the Buckeyes fell to 0-1. In his five innings, Newman allowed five hits, five runs (two earned) and struck out four batters while walking four. Trey Fausnaugh (Fr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) pitched two innings for Ohio State and Carroll pitched one inning.
Ohio State continues play at the Minute Maid College Classic Saturday at noon (11 a.m., CST) against Kansas State before closing out the tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. (10 a.m., CST) against Texas Tech.
