COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 25th-ranked Ohio State (12-6 overall, 2-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-22) decision to top-ranked Illinois (16-0, 5-0) in front of 1,352 fans in St. John Arena. Coleen Ward and Michelle Bartsch shared match-high honors in points with 15.5 each for the Illini. Ward had 14 kills (.360), one solo block and one assist block while Bartsch posted 12 kills (.250), one ace serve, two solo blocks and one assist blocks. OSU Mari Hole recorded a team-high 12 points with 11 kills (.240) and one solo block.

With the first set tied at eight, an Illini error, a kill from Kaitlyn Leary and a Mariah Booth ace serve gave Ohio State an 11-8 lead. Illinois responded by scoring the next eight points to open a 16-11 lead. The run included two kills from Ward, one from Bartsch, a Bartsch ace serve and four OSU errors. Trailing, 21-15, two kills from Hole and an ace serve from Amanda Peterson cut the lead to 21-18. At 22-19, an OSU error and an Erin Johnson kill gave Illinois set point at 24-20. An Emily Danks and Kelli Barhorst block and a Barhorst kill stopped two set points to cut the margin to 24-22. An OSU error gave Illinois a 25-22 set win and a 1-0 lead in the match. The Illini hit .333 for the set to .308 for Ohio State.

OSU opened set two with kills from Hole and Booth for a 2-0 lead. Trailing, 3-2, Illinois scored the next four points to take a 6-3 lead. The run included two kills from Ward and a kill and solo block from Bartsch. At 7-4, a Leary kill, an Illinois error and a kill from Hole tied the set at seven. Illinois, with two kills from Ward, an OSU error and a Jackie Wolfe ace serve opened an 11-7 lead. Illinois would outscore Ohio State 14-5 the rest of the set to win, 25-12. They reached set point at 24-12 with a Johnson kill. Ward, with a kill, ended the set at 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Illinois hit .633 for the set to .143 for OSU.

Tied at seven in the third set, two kills from Bartsch gave Illinois a 9-7 lead. Danks, with a kill, cut the lead to 9-8. Kills from Liz McMahon, Bartsch and Johnson, a Johnson-Annie Luhrsen block and a Bartsch solo block opened a 14-8 Illini lead. A Peterson kill stopped the run at 14-9. Trailing, 20-14, Ohio State scored the next six points to tie the set at 20. The run began with kills from Danks and Alyssa Winner and an Illini error as Illinois called time out at 20-17. The run continued with an Erin Sekinger kill, an ace serve from Danks and an error by the Illini to tie the set at 20. Illinois responded with two kills from McMahon to make it 22-20. A Barhorst kill and a Buckeye error made it 23-21. Illinois reached match point with a kill from Ward at 24-21. Hole, with a solo block, stopped the match point at 24-22. The Illini won the set, 25-22, with a Luhrsen-Johnson block to win the match, 3-0. Illinois hit .163 for the set to .103 for Ohio State.

For the match, Illinois hit .350 to .168 for Ohio State. The Illini had a 47-35 advantage in kills and a 44-31 margin in assists. Luhrsen posted a match-high 40 assists for Illinois while Peterson recorded 27 for Ohio State. OSU had a 5-3 edge in ace serves with Danks and Peterson for OSU and Wolfe for Illinois recording two each. OSU gave up six service errors to four for the Illini. Defensively, Illinois had a 44-41 advantage in digs. OSU’s Hole posted a match-high 14 digs while Jennifer Beltram posted 13 for Illinois. At the net, Illinois had a 9-4 margin in team blocks. Anna Dorn posted a match-high four assists for Illinois.

The Buckeyes continue play at home in St. John Arena at 6 p.m. Saturday when they host Northwestern (10-6, 1-4).
