COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 24th-ranked Ohio State (6-8, Big Ten 0-5) women’s volleyball team remained winless in the Big Ten with a 3-1 (30-26, 30-27, 28-30, 30-26) defeat at the hands of No. 15 Wisconsin (12-4, 3-2) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) pounded down a match-high 26 kills and added 16 digs, also a match-high for the Buckeyes. Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) added 16 kills and Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) 11 for Ohio State. Erin Byrd (Sr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Sheila Shaw (Fr., Muskego, Wis.) shared team-high honors with 16 kills each with Lori Rittenhouse (Sr., Mankato, Minn.) adding 11. The match marked the return of OSU setter Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) after missing seven matches with an injured hand. Virtue had a match-high 61 assists.

Ohio State took an early 5-2 lead in game one and held a four-point lead at 13-9. At 14-12, an OSU error, kills by Lisa Zukowski (Jr., West Bend, Wis.) and Amy Hultgren (Sr., Spence, Iowa) and a block by Hultgren and Zukowski gave Wisconsin a 16-14 lead. OSU kills by Draeger and Brie Hagerty (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) tied the game at 16. A Buckeye error and a kill by Shaw made it 18-16, Wisconsin. OSU cut the margin to one at 20-19 with a Virtue kill and a Badger error tied the game at 20. A Shaw kill and two OSU errors opened up a 23-20 Badger margin. Wisconsin would expand the lead to six at 27-21 and with a Rittenhouse kill end the game at 30-26. Wisconsin hit .324 for the game to .186 for Ohio State. Game two had 12 ties, the last at 25-all. Wisconsin ran off the next four points to take a 29-25 lead. The run had an OSU error, a solo block by Rittenhouse, an ace serve by Morgan Shields (Sr., Watertown, Wis.) and a Byrd kill. Two Badger errors cut the margin to 29-27. A Byrd kill ended the game at 30-27, giving Wisconsin a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .250 for the game to .180 for Wisconsin.

Tied at five-all in game three, two kills by Gordon and one from Virtue opened an 8-5 OSU lead. Three Buckeye errors and kills by Shaw and Hultgren allowed Wisconsin to take a 10-8 lead. OSU came back with kills from Stiling and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and two blocks from Virtue and Higgins and another by Virtue, Draeger and Higgins to open up a 14-10 lead. At 16-12, two Byrd kills and an OSU error cut the margin to 16-15. A Gordon kill stopped the run (17-15). A kill by Lauren Ford (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.) cut the margin to 17-16. Draeger’s kill made it 18-16, but an OSU error and a Byrd kill tied the game at 18. Tied at 21, a Shaw kill, a block by Byrd and Ford made it 23-21, Wisconsin. Gordon and Byrd exchanged kill to make it 24-22, UW. At 26-24, a Buckeye error opened a three-point lead for Wisconsin at 27-24. After an OSU time out, kills by Gordon and Draeger cut the margin to 27-26 as Wisconsin called time out. A Draeger kill tied the game at 27, but an OSU service error made it 28-27, Wisconsin. Another Draeger kill tied the game at 28 and a Wisconsin error set game point at 29-28 for OSU. Gordon’s kill ended the game at 30-28 for Ohio State. The Buckeye hit .326 for the game to .242 for the Badgers.

Wisconsin jumped out to a 10-1 lead in game four, expanding the lead to 14 at 20-6. At 28-18, Ohio State scored seven consecutive points to cut the lead to 28-25. The run had four Gordon kills and three Badger errors. A Buckeye error stopped the run setting match point at 29-25. Gordon’s 26th kill of the match made it 29-26 but a Hultgren kill ended the game at 30-26 for Wisconsin. The Badgers hit .224 for the game to .154 for the Buckeyes.

For the match Wisconsin hit .235 to .224 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 69-64 advantage in kills. The Badgers out served OSU, seven to two and gave up 11 service errors to 10 for Ohio State. UW’s Shields had a match-high five ace serves. OSU had a 63-60 margin in digs with Gordon collecting a match-high 16. OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) had a career-high 14. UW’s Korie Gardner (Jr., West Bend, Wis.) recorded a team-high 14 for the Badgers. At the net, Ohio State had a nine to seven advantage with Virtue and Higgins collecting a match-high five assist blocks each.

Ohio State continues Big Ten play Saturday night when it hosts Northwestern at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena

OHIO STATE NOTES:

Shelly Draeger had 16 kills against Wisconsin for her season high. Her previous high was 11 three times, the last at Michigan State. Her 16 kills raises her career total to 1,001 as she becomes the 14th Buckeyes to reach 1,000 career kills.

With her 26 kills, Stacey Gordon has extended her streak of double-figure kills to 30 matches. For her career, she has had double-figure kills in 43 of 45 matches. It was also her 18th match with 20 or more kills.

Setter Katie Virtue started against Wisconsin after missing the last seven matches with an injured hand. She is the second of five injured players to return to action. Last week setter Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) started both matches after missing three with a concussion.

Rebecca Kastein played the libero position tonight and collected a career-high 14 digs. She is the fourth Buckeye to play the libero position this season. Others include Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) [7 matches], Tamika Drake (Jr., Euclid, Ohio) [5 matches] and Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) [1 match].

OSU’s starting lineup of Virtue, Higgins, Whalen, Stiling, Gordon and Draeger was the 12th different combination to start for the Buckeyes. It is the 10th consecutive different lineup used by Ohio State.
