COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a match-high 26 kills from Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) the 24th-ranked Ohio State (7-8, Big Ten 1-5) women’s volleyball team defeated Northwestern (11-7, 4-2) 3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 30-22) Saturday night in St. John Arena. It marked OSU’s first conference win of the season, defeating the Wildcats who is third in the Big Ten. Also in double-figures for Ohio State was Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) with 18 and Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) with 10. Northwestern’s Erika Lange (Jr., Orland Park, Ill.) had a team-high 13 kills for the Wildcats with Christie Gardner (Fr., West Bend, Wis.) and Iwona Lodzik (Jr., Tarnobrzeg, Poland) adding six each.

In a closely contested game one, Ohio State held a 21-20 lead before a Gordon kill and a Stiling ace serve opened a 23-20 Buckeye lead. Following a Northwestern time out, a Draeger kill and a Wildcat error pushed the lead to 25-20. At 27-22, a kill by Lange and an OSU error cut the margin to 27-24. Buckeye kills by Draeger and Brie Hagerty (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) made it game point at 29-24. A Northwestern error ended the game at 30-24 for Ohio State. Ohio State hit .227 for the game with Northwestern hitting .212. Both Gordon and Draeger recorded eight kills in the game.

Northwestern had a nine-point lead at 21-12 in game two. Buckeye kills from Gordon and Stiling and two from Draeger cut the margin to 21-16. A Lodzik kill stopped the run but a Draeger kill advanced the score to 22-17. Wildcat blocks by Sarah Ballog (Sr., Coto de Caza, Calif.) – Kelli Meyer (Sr., Madison, Wis.) and Lange – Christie Gardner (Fr., West Bend, Wis.) made it 24-17. Ohio State responded with six straight points starting with a block by Katie Virtue (St. Charles, Ill.) and Stiling. Stiling added three kills and with two Wildcat errors, OSU trailed 24-23. A Lange kill made it 25-23. A Gordon kill and a block by Gordon and Stephanie Higgins (Fr. Biggsville, Ill.) tied the match at 25. OSU took a 26-25 lead with a Gordon kill but an OSU error tied the game at 26. Two Gordon kills and a block by Draeger and Higgins set game point at 29-26. Drew Robertson (So., Long Beach, Calif.) stopped the attempt with a kill (29-27), but Gordon’s 19th kill of the match ended the game at 30-27. The Buckeyes hit .293 for the game to .156 for Northwestern. OSU’s Gordon produced 11 kills in the game. Tied at two-all in game three, OSU opened a 7-2 lead with blocks by Stiling and Virtue and Higgins and Virtue, a Gordon kill and two NU errors. The Wildcats cut the lead to three at 15-12, but two Gordon kills and one from Draeger pushed the lead to 18-12. A Lange-Robertson block and an ace serve from Lindsay Pavlik (So., Laguna Beach, Calif.) cut the margin to 18-14. Two Draeger kills and an ace from Gordon made it 21-14, OSU. With her 26th kill of the match, Gordon ended the game at 30-22 giving OSU the win, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .195 while Northwestern hit .000.

Ohio State hit .238 for the match to .115 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes enjoyed a 59-33-kill advantage. Each squad had three ace serve and gave up seven service errors. NU’s Pavlik had all three aces for the Wildcats while OSU’s Gordon had a team-high two. The Buckeyes enjoyed a 47-29 advantage in digs with Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) collecting a match-high 11 with Draeger adding 10. Northwestern had a 15-8 advantage at the net in blocks. Wildcat Lange had a match-high nine blocks (2-7) with Robertson adding six assists. OSU’s Virtue had 48 assists in the match with Robertson recording 23 for Northwestern.

OSU Notes

Stacey Gordon continued her consecutive double-figure kill streak with 26 against Northwestern. She has now recorded double-figure kills in her last 31 matches. For her career, Gordon has double-figure kills in 44 of 46 matches and has 19 matches with 20 or more kills. With her 26 kills against Wisconsin on Friday, Gordon average 7.43 kills per game for the weekend.

Shelly Draeger had a season-high 18 kills against Northwestern while hitting a season-high .538 (18-4-26). With her 16 kills and hitting .364 (16-4-33), Draeger averaged 4.86 kills per game for the two matches and hit a combined .441 (34-8-59).
