COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State Buckeyes fell to the No. 9 Delaware Blue Hens 3-2in their season opener at Buckeye Varsity Field on Friday, August 24. After tying the game in the second half, the Buckeyes were unable to respond to a late goal by the Blue Hens.
The Blue Hens were the first on the board in the contest, scoring eight minutes into the first half. The team would go on to have a penalty corner with five minutes left to play in the half where they would score their second goal of the game.
Ohio State kept fighting. The team got multiple breakaways on offense but was unable to get the shot off. With under two minutes to play in the first half, the Buckeyes had two opportunities to score off of penalty corners. On the second attempt, Courtney Daniels set up Whitney Harris to score the Buckeyes’ first goal of the game.
The Buckeyes came out of the half hoping to build off of the momentum from Harris’ goal. Freshman goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez started the half for the Buckeyes, making big stops between the pipes to keep the team in the game. The defense came out strong, halting any Delaware breakaways. On the first penalty corner of the half, Esther Clotet scored her first goal of the season on assists from Sammy Stone and Hannah Pany.
With only four minutes to play in the game, Delaware’s Greta Nauck scored her second goal take back the Blue Hen lead. In an effort to tie the game, the Buckeyes pulled Hernandez and sophomore Mara Hunter entered the game for the Buckeyes. The game came down to a final penalty corner for Ohio State, but the team could not score on their final possession.
The Buckeyes travel to Louisville for their first road trip of the season. Ohio State will take on No. 8 Louisville on Sunday, August 26 at 1:00 p.m.
