COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 24 men’s tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to No. 14 Alabama Friday at the Hank Crisp Indoor Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Buckeyes fall to 5-2 on the 2003 season and the undefeated Crimson Tide improves its winning streak to seven. Ohio State remains perfect at home (5-0) and drops to 0-2 on the road.

In doubles action, the Ohio State duo of Vince Ng (Sr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Brenton Contini (Jr., Dover, Ohio) improved their winning streak to 7-0 as they upset Alabama’s No. 51 Maxim Belski and Bradley Freidman, 9-8. Ohio State fell to the Tide at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions, which earned Alabama the doubles point. Jeremy Wurtzman (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Scott Green (Fr., North Canton, Ohio) fell to the No. 8-ranked tandem of Geoff Hiscox and Stephen Mitchell, 8-3. Alabama’s William Boyles and Chris Gostek defeated Conor Casey (Jr., Ontario, Canada) and Ross Wilson (Fr., Toledo, Ohio), 8-3.

Ohio State nearly upset the No. 14 Tide in singles action. The Buckeyes claimed three singles points at the Nos. 2, 4 and 6 positions. Wurtzman, ranked No. 7 in the country, improved his 2002-03 singles record to 17-5 after defeating No. 63 Mitchell, 7-5, 6-2. Contini closed with a victory over Hiscox, 6-3, 6-2. In the 2003 season, Contini remains perfect in both singles (5-0) and doubles (7-0) action. Wilson was victorious over Michael Ray Pallares, 6-3, 7-5 and remains undefeated with three singles wins on the 2003 season.

At the No. 5 singles position, Kevin McLean (So., Vancouver, Canada) fell to Christian Brodersen, 6-2, 6-4. Ng, ranked No. 45, suffered his first loss after a 17-match winning streak (includes 2002-03 tournament play) in a tiebreaker to No. 39 Belski, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5). Ng’s loss gave Alabama the 4-3 decision. Next up, the Buckeye squad travels Sunday to take on the No. 28 Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville, Tenn.
