COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State women’s volleyball team opened the 2012 season with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) win over Houston in the second match of the Sports Imports DC Koehl Classic Friday night in St. John Arena.

Seniors Emily Danks and Mari Hole led the squad offensively, tallying 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior Davionna DiSalvatore notched 10 digs, while senior setter Amanda Peterson finished with a match-high 38 assists and added two service aces. Danks and freshman Andrea Kacsits had four blocks each (2s, 2a). Senior Mariah Booth and junior Kaitlyn Leary added eight kills in the win.

Houston (0-2) was led by Katie Norris, who finished with a match-high 17 kills. Olivia O’Dell and Natalie Keck had 11 and 13 digs, respectively, while setter Abby Simmons had 29 assists.

Down 3-2 in the first set, a kill by Danks and a service ace from DiSalvatore triggered a 5-1 Buckeye run for a 7-4 Ohio State lead. A block by Hole and Booth put the home squad up 10-5 and the Buckeyes pushed for a 17-13 lead to force a Houston timeout. Back-to-back Buckeye blocks set the score at 22-16 and, despite a four-point Cougar rally at the end, Ohio State held on for a 25-21 win.

Kills by Leary and Booth put the Scarlet and Gray up 4-2 to start set two, but Houston rattled off a 6-1 run to take a 9-6 lead. The Buckeyes responded with a run of their own and took back the advantage, 12-10, to cause a Cougar timeout. Another Ohio State rally highlighted by two Leary kills put the Buckeyes up 16-13 and the squad finished the set scoring four-consecutive points to win 25-20.

Following intermission, Houston returned with new life and jumped out to a 7-3 lead. A kill by Kacsits and a solo block by Danks brought the Buckeyes within three at 11-8 and a pair of Cougar attack errors led to a 14-14 tie. A Booth block gave Ohio State its first lead at 15-14, while another kill from Kacsits sent the Buckeyes on a run that led to a 25-21 match win.

In other Classic action, Toledo opened the tournament with a 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 15-11) victory over Houston. No. 20 Oregon topped Toledo, 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-19), to close out the day.

Ohio State returns to the court Saturday for day two of the Sports Imports DC Koehl Classic, facing Toledo at 11:30 a.m. in St. John Arena. Oregon and Houston compete at 1:30 p.m. and the tournament concludes with a 7:30 p.m. match between the Buckeyes and the Ducks.
