COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State wrestling team dropped a heartbreaking 20-19 decision to Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon in a first consolation match at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals in the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Buckeyes fell to No. 1 Cornell, 27-6, in Round of 16 action earlier in the day.
With the loss, Ohio State (1-5; 0-1 Big Ten) is eliminated from the National Duals, while host UNI will move on to the next round where it will wrestle either No. 2 Oklahoma State or No. 7 Virginia Tech. 
In a match that featured four lead changes and three ties, the Buckeyes led the Panthers, 19-16, heading into the final match at heavyweight. However, UNI’s Christian Brantley was able to record the 12-3 major decision over redshirt-sophomore Dominic Jontony to give Northern Iowa the one-point win.  
Trailing 16-13, redshirt-freshman Peter Capone earned his second win of the National Duals at 197 pounds when he pinned Joe Johnson in 2:57 to lift Ohio State to the 19-16 lead. 
With the Scarlet and Gray trailing 3-0 early after the first bout at 125 pounds, sophomore Ian Paddock secured three points for the Buckeyes when he decisioned Ryan Jauch, 8-5. Ohio State then took a 7-3 advantage when freshman Randy Languis, a Dublin, Ohio, native earned his first collegiate dual win following an impressive 12-0 shutout over Alec Hoffman at 141 pounds. 
However an 11-3 loss by redshirt-freshman Mike Fee at 149 pounds to Brett Robbins ensued and with the scored tied a 7-all, David Bonin of UNI helped the Panthers take a 13-7 lead when he pinned redshirt-junior Sean Nemec in 3:34. 
With the match far from over, senior Colt Sponseller downed Nick Pickerell, 4-0, to pull the Buckeyes to within three points after the 165-pound bout. Another Buckeye win (3-2) at 174 pounds by redshirt-freshman Nick Heflin helped Ohio State tie the match, 13-13, but a 6-4 loss by C.J. Magrum at 184 pounds left the Scarlet and Gray down by three points with two matches remaining.   
Ohio State will return to Big Ten Conference action when it hosts Michigan State at 2 p.m. Jan. 16 at West Holmes High School in Millersburg, Ohio. Tickets to the match are sold out.
