Iowa City, Iowa – The 24th ranked Ohio State field hockey dropped a 1-0 contest to No. 25 Iowa on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field. A goal off a penalty corner in the 34th minute of the game by the Hawkeyes was the winning score.
The loss drops Ohio State to 9-8 overall (2-6 Big Ten), while Iowa bettered its record to 7-10 (3-5 Big Ten). The loss for Ohio State means it will have to face off against Indiana on Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich., for the play-in game to the Big Ten tournament.
The Buckeyes outshot Iowa (9-6) and collected more penalty corners (5-4) than the Hawkeyes, but were unable to get the ball in the net.
In the first half, the Scarlet and Gray dominated play. The Buckeyes had two unlucky breaks in the first 35 minutes of play. In the 12th minute of the game, Caroline Rath sent a cross into the circle to Morgan Kile. Kile possessed the ball before turning and firing towards the goal. She beat the keeper, but not the crossbar as the ball ricocheted out of bounds.
Nine minutes later, Esther Clotet Alsina had another terrific chance after she received Maddy Humphrey’s entry into the circle. Using the same move that Kile did, Clotet Alsina’s shot easily beat the keeper but was just a tad too wide and hit the post.
In the second half, freshman Juliette Duquesne took the Buckeyes only two shots on goal. Both shots were good attempts, but the Iowa goalkeeper had a read on both of them.
