COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 24th-ranked Ohio State (14-6 overall, 4-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team won a 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-12, 26-24) decision over Indiana (8-11, 0-7) in University Gymnasium. OSU’s Emily Danks posted a match and career-high 26.5 points against the Hoosiers with 21 kills (.475), one ace serve, one solo block and seven assist blocks. Mari Hole added 16 points for the Buckeyes with 16 kills (.483). Indiana’s Kelci Marschall recorded a team-high 14 points with 13 kills (.290) and one solo block. Ivie Obeime added 10.5 points with 10 kills (-.054) and one assist block.
Tied at one in the first set, two kills by Danks gave OSU a 3-1 lead. At 5-3, an OSU error cut the lead to 5-4. OSU scored the next four points with a Kaitlyn Leary kill, two Indiana errors and a Kelli Barhorst-Amanda Peterson block to take a 9-4 lead. At 17-12, a Barhorst kill, a Barhorst-Peterson block and two kills from Leary opened a 21-12 lead. At 23-15, a Peterson kill gave Ohio State set point at 24-16. Indiana stopped the set point at 24-16 with a Morgan Leach kill. The Buckeyes, with a Mariah Booth kill, won the set, 25-16, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .619 for the set to .074 for the Hoosiers.
Set two had 11 ties and four lead changes. Indiana held the early lead at 6-3. OSU trailed, 10-8, when a kill from Danks and a Danks-Booth block tied the set at 10. Tied at 12, the Buckeyes took a 14-12 lead with an Indiana error and a Leary kill. Indiana trailed, 18-15, when a Samantha Thrower kill, an OSU error and a Marschall kill tied the set at 18. Tied at 22, two kills from Marschall gave Indiana set point at 24-22. A Hoosier error stopped the set point at 24-23. Indiana won the set, 25-23, with a Marschall kill to tie the match at one set each. Indiana hit .342 to .314 for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes opened set three with the first five points from kills by Booth, Danks and Leary, a Booth-Danks block and a solo block from Danks. A Kristen Seaton kill stopped the run at 5-1. Ohio State expanded the lead to 10-1 with kills from Booth and Danks, an Indiana error and blocks from Danks and Barhorst and Barhorst and Leary. The Buckeyes built the lead to 23-12 and reached set point at 24-12 with a kill from Danks. A second kill from Danks won the set, 25-12, to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .393 for the set to -.143 for Indiana.
Set four had eight ties and five lead changes as the set reached 14-all. Two Indiana errors and a Peterson kill gave OSU a 17-14 lead. An Obeime kill made it 17-15. A Leary kill and a Hoosier error made the lead, 19-15. At 23-19, a Thrower kill made it 23-20. A Leary kill gave Ohio State match-point at 24-20. A Leach kills stopped the match point at 24-21. A Buckeye error stopped a second match point at 24-22. An Obeime kill stopped a third match point at 24-23. After an exchange of points, a Peterson solo block won the set, 26-24, for an 3-1 Ohio State victory. The Buckeyes hit .389 for the set to .184 for Indiana.
For the match, Ohio State hit .408 to .137 for Indiana. The Buckeyes had a 61-49 advantage in kills and a 58-42 margin in assists. OSU’s Peterson posted a match-high 49 assists with Mary Chaudoin recording 36 for the Hoosiers. Indiana had a 2-1 edge in ace serves with OSU having 11 service errors to seven for the Hoosiers. Defensively, each squad posted 41 digs with IU’s Caitlin Cox recording a match-high 19. OSU’s Hole recorded a team-high 13 digs for a double-double (kills-digs). At the net, Ohio State had a 15 to four advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Barhorst had a match-high nine blocks with a solo and eight assists with Danks adding eight blocks with a solo and seven assists.
Ohio State continues on the road Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at No. 11 Purdue (15-3, 4-3).
