COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 23rd ranked Ohio State (3-0) women’s volleyball team won the Towson University Invitational Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Towson (1-2), 3-1 (28-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-22). OSU’s Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 34 points to tie her career-high for the Buckeyes with Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) adding 14. Meyer had a match-high 31 kills, one ace serve and two solos blocks while Stevens recorded 10 kill, a solo block and six assists. Towson’s Maddie Haseltine scored a team-high 33 points for the Tigers with Ally Perko adding 13.5. Haseltine recorded a team-high 28 kills, adding four ace serves and two assist blocks with Perko collecting 11 kill, one ace serve and three assist blocks.

Ohio State broke an eight-all tie with a seven-one point run to open a 15-9 lead. Towson slowly cut the lead, tying the game at 24 with a Valerie Chromy, Christina Grempler and Perko block. Tied at 25, a Kimberly Snider kill, an OSU error and a Grempler-Snider block gave the Tigers a 28-25 lead. Kills from Stevens and Grempler made it 29-26. Buckeye kills from Meyer and Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) cut the lead to one at 29-28. Haseltine ended the game with a kill for a 30-28 Towson win. The Tigers hit .257 for the game to .244 for OSU.

After Towson opened game two with a 2-0 lead, Ohio State tied the game at eight with a Kristen Dozier (Fr., Sandy Spring, Md.)-Stevens block. Tied at eight, a Tiger error and a Dozier kill gave OSU a 10-8 lead. Trailing 25-22, Towson tied the game at 25 with a Hazeltine kill. Tied at 27, a Meyer kill and a Towson error set game point at 29-27. Meyer ended the game with a kill for a 30-27 OSU win to tie the game at one each.

Towson took a quick 4-0 lead in game three. The Buckeyes kept the score close and with a Meghan Simons (Fr., Carroll, Ohio)-Briana McCarthy (Sr./Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) block tied the game at 15. The squads exchanged points to a 24-24 tie. A Tiger error and a Meyer kill gave OSU a 26-24 lead. At 28-26, a Simons’ kill set game point at 29-26. A Towson kill by Haseltine made it 29-27. Meyer closed out the game with a kill for a 30-27 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .286 for the game to .225 for Towson. OSU’s Meyer scored 11 kills in the game.

Game four saw Ohio State break a 1-1 tie with a kill and block by Meyer and an ace serve from Dozier for a 4-1 lead. The Buckeyes continued to expand the lead taking an eight-point lead at 17-9. OSU, with a 28-22 lead, reached match point with a Meyer kill. Meyer closed out the match with her 31st kill of the match and 10th of the game for a 30-22 win for a 3-1 victory. The Buckeyes hit .400 for the game to .196 for Towson.

In the match, Ohio State hit .275 to .193 for Towson. The Buckeyes had a 72-60 edge in kills while the Tigers had a five to two advantage in ace serves. Towson gave up 13 service errors to ten for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ohio State had a 70-54 advantage in digs with OSU’s Meyer recording a match-high 16. At the net, the Tigers had a 14.5 to 13.5 edge in team blocks with Tiger Grempler recording a match-high nine blocks (two solo and seven assists). OSU’s Main collected 61 assists while Kimberly Snider had 50.

Earlier today, Houston (2-1) defeated Robert Morris (0-3), 3-0 (30-23, 30-13, 30-17). Ohio State placed Stevens, Simons and Meyer on the All-Tournament team with Meyer named the Most Valuable Player. Also named to the team were Towson’s Snider and Grempler and Houston’s Justine Farmer and Becca Sartori.

The Buckeyes return home next Friday to host the Buckeye Invitational, hosting Lehigh (0-3) at 10:30 p.m. and Iona (1-2) at 7 p.m. Ohio State then hosts Northern Illinois (2-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. All three matches will be played in St. John Arena.
