COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 23rd ranked Ohio State (2-0) women’s volleyball team overcame a 2-1 Houston (1-1) lead to rally for a 3-2 (30-32, 30-18, 28-30, 30-15, 15-12) victory in the second round of the Towson Invitational Saturday night. Buckeye Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded career-highs of 34 points and 30 kills in the match with Kristen Dozier (Fr., Sandy Spring, Md.) adding 15.5 points. Meyer collected 30 kills, two ace serves and four assist blocks while Dozier had eight kills, an ace serve and an OSU match record of 13 assist blocks. Houston’s Justine Farmer had a team-high 21 points for the Cougars with Kelly McAnelly adding 17. Farmer had 19 kills, an ace serve and two assist blocks while McAnelly had 17 kills in the match.

Ohio State held an early 10-8 lead with a kill by Dozier and an ace serve from Briana McCarthy (Sr./Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis.). Houston tied the game at 12 with a Kinsey Cave ace serve and with a Cave ace and a Becca Sartori kill took a 14-12 lead. The Cougars held a five-point lead at 26-21. At 28-24, Houston, the Buckeyes scored four straight points to tie the game at 28. At 30-30, a block by Sartori and a Farmer kill ended the game at 32-30, Houston. The Cougars hit .359 for the game to .227 for OSU.

Game two saw the Buckeyes break a three-all tie with a Meyer ace serve. With an Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) solo block and two Cougar errors opened a 7-3 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead, winning the game with a Dozier-Stevens block at 30-18 tying the match at one-all. The Buckeyes hit .552 in the game to .091 for Houston. Houston held the early lead in game three at 11-7. Three Houston errors and a Dozier-Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) tied the game at 11. The Buckeyes took the lead to three several times but an OSU error tied the game at 27. At 28-all, a Sartori kill and an OSU error ended the game at 30-28, Houston, giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the match. Houston hit .351 for the game to .321 for the Buckeyes.

Tied at 8-all, Ohio State used a Meyer kill, two Houston errors and a Meyer-Meghan Simons (Fr., Carroll, Ohio) block to open a 12-8 Buckeye lead. Ohio State expanded the lead 27-15 lead. A kill by Stevens and two from Meyer closed out the game for a 30-15 OSU win, tying the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .593 for the game to .057 for Houston.

Ohio State broke a four-all tie in the fifth game with a Dozier kill and a Dozier-Main block for a 6-4 lead. At 8-6, two Meyer kills opened a four-point lead for OSU at 10-6. At 14-10, a McAnelly kill cut the margin to three at 14-11. A Buckeye error made it 14-12. Ohio State won the game, 15-12 with a McCarthy-Dozier block to win the game, 3-2. The Buckeyes hit .179 to .036 for Houston.

For the match, Ohio State hit .359 to .169 for Houston. The Buckeyes had a 77-63 margin in kills while Houston outserved Ohio State, eight to five. The Cougars gave up 15 service errors to nine for the Buckeyes. Defensively, OSU had a 65-48 advantage in digs with Stevens recording a match-high 17 for the Buckeyes. At the net, Ohio State produced an 18 to four advantage in team blocks with OSU’s Dozier collecting a match-high 13 assist blocks. Her 13 assist blocks sets an OSU match record previously held by Margie Meyers with 11 at Michigan State in 1987. Her 13 total blocks equals the Buckeye match record held by Jenny Collins (7 solos, 6 assists) set at Miami (OH) in 1984. OSU’s Main posted 62 assists in the match while Houston’s Kelsey King had 55.

The Buckeyes close out play at the Towson University Invitational Sunday when they play host Towson (1-1) at 2 p.m. In second round play Towson defeated Robert Morris (0-2), 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-25.
