On the eve before the last swimming and diving meet at Peppe Pool, the No. 23 Ohio State men’s swimming and diving program defeated Big Ten opponent Michigan State by a score of 127-102. The Buckeyes improved their record to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes began the meet strong, placing first and second in the 400-yard medley relay. Ryan Sciortino (Sr., Maitland, Fla./Lake Highland) then swam to a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 9:34.92. Joe Doyle (So., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) out-touched the Spartan swimmers in a time of 1:42.09 in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by a win in the 50-yard freestyle by Matt Voelker (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington).

Tommy Seay (Sr., Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) was the only double-event winner. Seay took the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:53.08, followed by Daniel Novak (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Foothill Knight). Seay won his second event in the 100-yard freestyle – his ninth consecutive win in the event – with a time of 45.34. Gary Grant (So., Wood-Ridge, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Chris Stoneburg (Jr., Copley, Ohio/Akron Firestone) took first and second in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 51.37 and 51.59, respectively.

The Buckeyes swept the 100-yard backstroke with R.J. Lemyre (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) touching the wall first in 50.95, followed closely behind by Novak and Ben Prater (Fr., New Albany, Ohio/Columbus Acadamy). Nate King (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding) reached the wall in 4:36.88, a season-best time, to place first in the 500-yard freestyle event. The Buckeye swimmers capped off the meet with a 1:22.67 win in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

In the diving well, the Buckeyes went 1-2-3-4 on both boards. Mitch Richeson (Sr., Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) took the 1-meter board with a season high of 361.87 points. Richeson was followed by Nick Hanneman (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Marc Dreyer (Jr., Port Elisabeth, South Africa/Grey) and Kellen Harkness (So., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian). Dreyer scored 340.12 points on the 3-meter board to place first, followed by Harkness, Richeson and Hanneman.

“I’m pleased with the team effort tonight,” Bill Wadley, Ohio State head coach, said. “There were good individual swims, but overall I’m happy with the team effort. R.J. Lemyre in the 100-yard backstroke was outstanding. Tommy Seay had a good night. He took the 100 free again. He’s really great and dominant in that race. We’ve also had real promise in our relay teams, which is important for team events. Relays get everybody loud and involved in the meet. I think we could still swim a little faster, but overall I’m happy with our guys.”

The Buckeyes return to the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center one final time Saturday at 1 p.m. as they play host to No. 6 Michigan. Ohio State will be recognizing the senior members of the 2004-05 team, along with the legacy of Peppe Pool beginning at 12:45 p.m.
