COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State, ranked 21st in the nation and on the road for the first time this season, cruised to a 213-87 victory over Ohio University Friday in women’s swimming and diving action at the University Aquatic Center in Athens, Ohio. The win improved Ohio State’s record to 4-0 on the season. Ohio is now 2-2.
The Buckeyes won 12 of 13 swimming events with Angela Severn touching first in three individual events, plus Bianca Alvarez took first on both the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions, to spark the Buckeyes.
“We were a little better this week than last which is what you hope for as a coach,” third-year coach Bill Dorenkott said. “More importantly, our approach to preparing to compete and actually competing is getting better. Our confidence is growing which will lead to bigger goals and the corresponding effort needed to reach them.”
Severn, a sophomore from Harleysville, Pa., was actually a four-event winner as she swam the second leg of the meet-opening 200 medley relay. Kelsey Moran, Phoebe Cater and Megan Detro were also on the team.
Severn picked up her individual event wins in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke events in 1:04.34 and 2:20.60, respectively, and she also won the 400 individual medley in 4:24.99.
“Angela had a good night,” Dorenkott said. “She can swim so many events and swim them well. It was nice to show her versatility tonight.”
Senior Samantha Cheverton and Detro, a sophomore, joined Severn and Alvarez as multiple event winners. Cheverton won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.28 and the 500 free in 4:56.33 while Detro was king of the sprints with wins in the 50 free (23.43) and 100 free (50.43).
Other winners on a dominant evening for the Buckeyes were Kelsey Moran (100 backstroke), Shannon Draves (200 butterfly) and Emily Creran (200 backstroke).
“Ohio, which is a strong team and is good enough to win the MAC championship this year, beat Ohio State three years ago,” Dorenkott said. “Tonight I think Ohio State made a little bit of a statement.”
The Buckeyes are back in action next week at the three-day Purdue Invitational.
