COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 20th-ranked Ohio State (5-6 overall, 3-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team fell short in a 14-13 sudden death double overtime loss to Vanderbilt (5-7, 2-3) Sunday afternoon in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Leading Ohio State with three goals each were Natale Miller (So., Birmingham, Pa.) and Regina Oliver (Sr., Pottstown, Pa.) while Commodores Kendall Thrift and Jennifer Tapscott each scored a game-high six points. Thrift had a game-high four goals and two assists while Tapscott had two goals and a game-high four assists.

Vanderbilt opened the scoring with the first three goals of the game. Meg Spies score with 3:30 gone in the game on an assist from Kate Hickman. Margie Curran scored unassisted at 4:42 and Hickman made it 3-0 at 7:06 with an assist from Thrift. Buckeye Kristen Slahor (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) put OSU on the board at 10:32 with an unassisted goal. Kelly Kremer (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa.) made it 3-2 with a free position score at 12:45. The Commodores made it 4-2 at 13:28 with a Bryn Sedlacek goal assisted by Tapscott. OSU responded at 16:10 with a Brandie Williams (Sr., Hatboro, Pa.) unassisted goal. Vanderbilt took a 6-3 lead with Hickman’s goal at 19:27, assisted by Thrift and a Thrift unassisted goal at 25:30. OSU’s Miller closed out the half with three consecutive goals. She scored unassisted at 27:34 and on a free position attempt at 28:53. Miller was awarded a free position attempt with one second left in the half and connected for the score (30:00) to tie the game at six at the half.

The Buckeyes took a 7-6 lead 18 seconds into the second half (30:18) with an Ashley Evans (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) goal, assisted by Slahor. At 31:13, KC Carter (Jr., Birchrunville, Pa.) gave OSU an 8-6 lead with an unassisted goal. Vanderbilt responded with the next five goal to take an 11-8 lead. Margie Curran made it 8-7 at 34:30, unassisted. Tapscott tied the game at eight on an assist from Curran at 36:36. A Thrift goal at 36:51 gave the Commodores the lead at 9-8 off a Tapscott assist. Curran’s second goal at 40:33, assisted by Tapscott and an unassisted goal by Tapscott at 41:18 gave Vanderbilt the 11-8 lead. OSU’s Oliver cut the margin to 11-9 at 43:15 with an unassisted goal. Carter’s second goal of the game at 53:02, assisted by Evans made it 11-10. VU’s Thrift countered with a goal at 56:02 giving Vanderbilt a 12-10 lead. Oliver scored again at 56:54 to cut the lead to one and Kremer tied the game at 12 at 57:43 on an Oliver assist. The regulation game ended tied at 12.

In the first overtime period, Vanderbilt scored with 22 seconds left in the first three-minute period on a Hickman goal. The Buckeyes tied the game on an Oliver free position shot with as time ran out (66:00) in the second three minute period.

Vanderbilt, in the sudden death second overtime period scored at 67:18 with Thrift’s fourth goal of the game, assisted by Tapscott for a 14-13 Vanderbilt victory.

In goal for the Commodores, Ashley Bastinelli took the win making nine saves while giving up 13 goals. OSU’s Kim Hastings (Jr., Sewickley, Pa.) took the loss making nine saves and giving up 12 goals in 64:06. Buckeye Joy DeMarco (So., Hudson, Ohio) saw action in the second half, giving up two goals in 3:12 with no saves.

Ohio State takes to the road next week when they face eighth-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m. Friday, April 22 and then play at Rutgers, Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m.
