COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 20 Ohio State men’s tennis team defeated No. 42 Northwestern, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes (20-2 overall, 9-0 Big Ten) only gave up one point to the Wildcats (12-8, 5-4). The victory gives OSU their 17th-consecutive victory, breaking the all-time record of 16 set last season.
The Buckeyes swept Northwestern in doubles. Conor Casey (So., Ontario, Canada/Mississippi) and Jeremy Wurtzman (So., Rochester, N.Y./Florida) defeated Tommy Hanus and Russell Bennett, 8-5, at the No. 1 position. Adrian Bohane (So., West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Lakes) and Paul Warkentin (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) posted a 8-2 victory over Jackie Jenkins and Chuck Perrin. Brenton Contini (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Phil Metz (Jr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) defeated Ryan Edlefsen and Josh Axler, 8-4.
In singles action, OSU only gave up one point. Casey could not pull off a victory against Joost Hol, 7-6(4), 6-1. No. 26 Metz defeated Hanus, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. No. 33 Wurtzman defeated Jamie Sahara in three, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. No. 114 Bohane posted a 6-1, 6-3 defeat over Ryan Edlefsen, at the No. 3 position. Vince Ng (Jr., Broadview Heights, Ohio/University School) defeated Josh Axler, 6-0, 6-4. Warkentin defeated Perrin, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 6 position.
OSU plays their last regular-season match against No. 3 Illinois on Sunday in Champaign, Ill. The match will determine the Big Ten regular-season champions. The Buckeyes then return home to host the 2002 Big Ten Championships in Columbus April 25-28 at Stickney Tennis Center, weather permitting.
