COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team lost, 4-1, to No. 6 Virginia in the semifinals of the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championship Sunday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Ohio State is now 8-1 overall for the 2010 campaign.
Ohio State falls to 2-3 all-time against the Cavaliers. The Scarlet and Gray finished the 2010 tournament with a 2-1 record and is 10-9 all-time in the event with all 10 victories coming under 11th-year head coach Ty Tucker.
Ohio State lost the doubles point to begin the semifinal match. The Buckeyes started on a good note after juniors Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa won 8-5 over Sanam Singh and Lee Singer at No. 3. The Buckeye duo is now 8-4 overall.
However, the Cavaliers won back-to-back matches at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, to take a 1-0 advantage. At No. 1, senior co-captain Justin Kronauge and sophomore Chase Buchanan lost, 8-6, against Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz. Kronauge and Buchanan fall to 8-6 overall and 5-3 at the top doubles position. Virginia clinched the doubles point when Jarmere Jenkins and Houston Barrick defeated Buckeyes Dino Marcan and Balazs Novak, 8-5, at No. 3. Marcan and Novak are now 9-2 overall.
In singles, each Buckeye member faced an opponent ranked in the Top 60 of the ITA standings. At No. 4, No. 34 Uzawa lost in straight sets to No. 31 Courtney 6-3, 6-3, to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage. Uzawa is now 11-8 overall.
Marcan, a native of Rijeka, Croatia, put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard after defeating 16th-ranked Jenkins 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. The win for Marcan was against the highest-ranked opponent he has faced in his young Ohio State career. He is the sixth Buckeye this season to hit the 10-win mark and is 10-1 overall.
The Cavaliers followed with consecutive wins in singles to clinch the win. At No. 5, No. 58 Houston Barrick defeated Novak 6-2, 6-4, while 12th-ranked Singh downed Kronauge in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Novak’s loss breaks his 12-match winning streak, while Kronauge falls to 11-3 overall with an 8-1 mark at No. 2.
Ohio State is back in action at home next weekend against a Top 10 opponent. The Buckeyes take on No. 10 Kentucky at noon Sunday at The Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. Live stats and updates will be available at OhioStateBuckeyes.com. Admission is free.
