COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team tallied an OSU team best 223.975 to top No. 11 Nebraska Saturday evening at St. John Arena. In the win, OSU captured all six events and two Buckeyes notched Ohio State all-time records in the 223.975-216.60 victory.
Sophomore Grant Osborne (Fort Collins, Colo./USOTC) led the way on floor with a 9.375. Jimmy Wickham (Fr., Gulfport, Miss./Planet Gym.) was second, tallying a score of 9.250. The Buckeyes captured the Top 3 spots on pommel horse, securing an Ohio State all-time team record of 38.6 on the apparatus. (OSU’s former all-time team high was a 37.4, compiled Jan. 22, 2005 vs. Illinois-Chicago.) On pommel horse, Willie Ito (So., Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gym.) notched a 9.9, surpassing his own OSU pommel horse record of 9.675, scored at Illinois earlier this season (Jan. 29). Ronald Ferris (Austintown, Ohio/Ohio Gym. Institute) and DJ Bucher (Fr., Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gym.) were second and third, compiling a career-high 9.75 and 9.7, respectively. Senior co-captain Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa./Central Pa. Academy of Gym.) was the top performer on rings, recording a 9.8. Bucher came in third with a 9.45.
Halfway through the meet, the Buckeyes held a 111.975-108.75 advantage over the Cornhuskers. The freshman duo of Pejman Ebrahimi (Granada Hills, Calif./LeClub Gym.) and Wickham finished as the top vaulters with Ebrahimi placing second (9.55) and Wickham third (9.45). On parallel bars Bucher scored a 9.65 for first-place and Nicholaus Searcy (So., Dublin, Ohio/Hocking Valley Gym. Center) was third with a score of 9.0. Ferris claimed the sixth and final rotation with his Buckeye all-time record of 9.925 on high bar. Monahan finished second, scoring a 9.85, tying his personal best from a year ago vs. Minnesota (Jan. 17, 2004). Bucher rounded out the Top 3, recording a 9.425. Up next for the Buckeyes is No. 5 Penn State. OSU will travel to University Park, Pa., to face the Nittany Lions at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Recreation Building.
