COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team defeated No. 16 Louisville, 4-2, in the first round of the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Boar’s Head Sports Club Friday in Charlottesville, Va. With the win, the Buckeyes (7-0; 0-0 Big Ten) advanced to their fourth-consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the championship and will take on No. 12 Florida at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Ohio State improves to 7-1 all-time against the Cardinals. Under 11th-year head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes are now 2-0 all-time against a team ranked 16th in the country. Also under Tucker, Ohio State owns a 9-8 record at the event with all nine victories captured in the past four years.
“It was a good win today in a tricky match against Louisville,” Tucker said. “All the teams here are going to have to get used to the fast courts but we competed well. We had our hands full but we are happy to win our first-round match and we look forward to taking on Florida tomorrow.”
With the team holding a close 3-2 advantage, junior Balazs Novak, a native of Budapest, Hungary, claimed the Buckeyes’ victory at No. 5 singles after downing Alejandro Calligari in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. He improves to a team-high 13-3 overall with an 11-match winning streak.
“I was pretty confident throughout my match today and I knew that either Allare or myself would be able to claim the match point,” Novak said. “We need to play our A-game tomorrow against Florida.”
In doubles, Ohio State won two out of three matches to claim the first point of the day. Freshman Dino Marcan and Novak suffered their first loss together in doubles of the season, losing at No. 2, 8-1, against No. 33 Robert Hall and Calligari. The Buckeye duo is now 8-1 overall. At No. 1, senior co-captain Justin Kronauge and sophomore Chase Buchanan tied up the doubles competition with an 8-6 victory over Simon Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk.
Juniors Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa finished out doubles play to seal the point, battling in a super-tiebreaker against Austen Childs and Chidi Gabriel at No. 3. The Buckeye pair won 9-8 (12-10) and is 7-3 overall with a 2-0 mark at No. 3.
In singles, Buchanan, ranked 103, dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match to No. 46 Austen Childs at No. l. With the loss, Buchanan suffers his first defeat at the top of the singles lineup. At No. 3, Marcan, a native of Rijeka, Croatia, stayed undefeated in singles play after defeating his second ranked opponent in his collegiate career, No. 81 Andrew Carter, 6-3, 6-4. Marcan is 9-0 overall and 4-0 at No. 3 singles.
Kronauge followed Marcan with his 10th victory of the season at No. 2. The Dayton, Ohio, native won 7-5, 6-2 against No. 84 Simon Childs, putting the Buckeyes one point away from advancement. No. 34 Uzawa lost 6-3, 6-2 against Maksimcuk at No. 4. Uzawa is 10-7 overall this season.
