COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th ranked Ohio State (23-7, 13-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team recorded its eighth straight shutout with a 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-21) victory over Illinois (15-15, 6-14). Buckeye Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) had a match-high 15 points for Ohio State with Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) adding 14.5 and Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) 14. Stevens recorded 13 kills, an ace serve and two assists blocks while hitting .524. Szerszen collected a match-high 14 kills and an assist block while Meyer had 13 kills (.600) and two assist blocks. Leading the Illini was Kylie McCulley with 13 points with 12 kills and a solo block.

Game one saw 10 ties to take the score to 18-all. An Illini error and a Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) solo block gave Ohio State a 20-18 lead. At 21-19, a Meyer kill made it 22-19. Illinois responded with kills by McCulley and Meghan Macdonald and a Macdonald-Stephanie Obermeier block to tie the game at 22. A Meyer kill and an Illinois error put OSU ahead, 24-22. Macdonald, with a kill cut the lead to 24-23. An ace serve by Stevens, a Meyer kill and two Illinois errors opened up a 28-23 lead. McCulley, with a kill cut the lead to 28-24 but an Illini error set game point at 29-24. Illinois, with kills from Amy Palash (25) and Vicki Brown (26) stopped two game points at 29-26. Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ont.) ended the game with a kill at 30-26. Ohio State hit .242 for the game to .211 for Illinois.

Illinois, with a Palash kill and an OSU error took a 2-0 lead in game two. The Buckeyes responded by scoring four straight points, starting with an Illinois error. A Jones kill, a block by Stevens and Jones, a Stevens’s kill made it 4-1, OSU. A Buckeye error made it 4-3. Kills by Szerszen and McCarthy and an Illinois error took the lead to 7-3. After a McCulley kill, an Illinois error and a Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) kill made the lead five at 9-4. A McCulley kill made it 9-5, but a kill from Stevens and two Illini errors gave OSU a 12-5 lead. A kill from Macdonald and an OSU error cut the lead to five at 12-7. Kills by Szerszen and Main and a Szerszen-Jones block gave OSU a 15-7 lead. The Buckeyes would out score Illinois, 15-11, in the rest of the game, reaching game point with a Main kill at 29-18. A Szerszen kill closed out the game at 30-18 for a 2-0 Buckeye lead in the match. Ohio State, with only one hitting error in the game hit .655 to .103 for Illinois. Trailing, 2-1, in game three, two McCarthy kills gave Ohio State a 3-2 lead. A McCulley kill and two OSU errors put Illinois ahead, 5-3. A McCarthy kill made it 5-4. A Macdonald kill and two Buckeye errors opened a four-point lead for the Illini at 8-4. Ohio State kills by Stevens, Meyer and Szerszen cut the lead to 8-7. An OSU error made it 9-7. Two Illini errors tied the game at nine. After four ties, a McCulley kill gave Illinois a 14-13 lead. The Buckeyes then scored six consecutive points to open a 19-14 lead. The run began with kills by Stevens and Szerszen. Two Illinois errors, a Meyer kill and a Meyer-Main block complete the run. A Buckeye error made it 19-15. Kills from Main and Szerszen opened a 21-15 lead. At 23-17, a Jones kill made the lead 24-17. Illinois, with a McCulley kill, an Ashley Edinger ace serve and a McCulley solo block cut the lead to 24-20. The Buckeyes responded with five straight points starting with kills from McCarthy, Szerszen and Stevens. An Ashley Kiel (Sr., Allenton, Wis.) ace serve and a kill from Stevens set match point at 29-20. McCulley stopped the match point with a kill at 29-21. Ohio State ended the game with a Myer kill to win, 30-21, and take the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .286 for the game to .175 for Illinois.

Ohio State hit .369 for the match to .168 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 54-37 margin in kills and a three-to-one edge in ace serves with OSU’s Kiel recording two. OSU gave up 10 service errors to eight for the Illini. Defensively, Ohio State had a 43-34 advantage in digs with Buckeye Kiel recording a match-high 16. At the net, the Illini had a six-to-five edge in team blocks. Brown, for Illinois, recorded a match-high three assist blocks. OSU’s Main had a match-high 46 assists in the match while Obermeier recorded 31 for Illinois.

The Buckeyes now wait for the 3 p.m. ET announcement by the NCAA on the Division I bracket that will be carried by ESPNEWS.
