COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th ranked Ohio State (22-7, 12-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team won, 3-0 (30-13, 30-28, 30-23) over Northwestern (14-14, 8-11) Friday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) scored a match-high 15 points for Ohio State with Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 12.5. Szerszen recorded a match-high 14 kills, adding two assist blocks while Meyer had nine kills, two ace serves, a solo block and one assist. Northwestern’s Brittney Aldridge had a team-high 13 points for the Wildcats with Lindsay Anderson adding 10.5. Aldridge recorded nine kills, an ace serve, a solo block and four assists while Anderson had a team-high 10 kills and an assist block.

Ohio State broke a 1-1 tie with kills from Szerszen and Meyer and an Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) ace serve for a 4-1 lead. A Chelsy Hyser kill made it 4-2. The Buckeyes then scored the next eight points to open a 12-2 lead. Ohio State kills by Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) and Szerszen started the run. Two Northwestern errors made it 8-2. A Main solo block, a Meyer ace serve and a Wildcat error took the lead to11-2. A second Meyer ace serve made it 12-2. The Buckeyes expanded the lead and held a 27-13 margin when a Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill and a Wildcat error set game point at 29-13. Meyer and Stevens combined for a block to end the game at 30-13, OSU. The Buckeyes hit .344 for the game to .000 for Northwestern.

Northwestern took the early lead in game two, 2-1, with kills from Aldridge and Anderson. OSU kills by Meyer and Szerszen made it 3-2, OSU. A Chelsy Hyser kill and two OSU errors made it 5-3, Wildcats. At 10-7, Northwestern, a Szerszen kill and two Wildcat errors tied the game at 10. Northwestern took an 11-10 lead with a Cassie McLaughlin kill. Two Wildcat errors made it 12-11, OSU. An Anderson kill tied the game at 12. The score moved to 18-all after five ties. A Meyer kill and a Wildcat error gave Ohio State a 20-18 lead. Northwestern regained the lead at 21-20 with an Anderson kill, an OSU error and a Hyser-Stephanie Jurivich block. A Wildcat error and a Szerszen kill put OSU ahead, 22-21. A Jurivich kill tied the game at 22. Buckeye kills from Main and McCarthy made it 24-22, OSU. An OSU error and a Szerszen kill made it 25-23. Kills by Aldridge, McCarthy and Meyer moved the score to 27-24. Northwestern cut the lead to one at 27-26 with an Anderson kill and an ace serve by Aldridge. A Wildcat error made it 28-26, OSU. An Anderson kill and a Buckeye error tied the game at 28. The Northwestern serve was out to set game point at 29-28. A Northwestern error ended the game, giving Ohio State a 30-28 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Northwestern hit .286 for the game to .250 for Ohio State.

Tied at one in game three, a Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ont.) kill, a Wildcat error and an Ashley Kiel (Sr., Allenton, Wis.) ace serve opened a 4-1 Ohio State lead. At 5-2, an Anderson kill and an OSU error cut the lead to 5-4. A Wildcat error made it 6-4. Two errors by Ohio State tied the game at six. A Meyer-Szerszen block and a Wildcat error put OSU ahead, 8-6. At 10-8, McLaughlin recorded two kills to tie the game at 10. At 12-all, a Meyer kill and a Northwestern error made it 14-12, OSU. A Hyser kill cut the lead to 14-13. Two Wildcat errors and a Szerszen kill made it 17-13. Anderson’s kill made it 17-14. A Northwestern error and a Jones’ kill gave OSU a 19-14 lead. Following a McLaughlin kill (19-15), the Buckeyes, with two Jones kills and one each from Szerszen and McCarthy took a 23-15 lead. Wildcat kills by Anderson and McLaughlin and two Ohio State errors made it 25-17. An OSU error and a Jurivich kill cut the lead to six at 25-19. After a McCarthy kill (26-19), kills by Hyser and Julie Purcell cut the lead to five at 26-21. Kills from Stevens and Hyser moved the score to 27-22. A Meyer kill and a Jones-Szerszen block set match point at 29-22. An Aldridge-Jurivich block stopped the match point at 29-23. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a kill from Main for a 30-23 win to capture the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .406 for the game to .220 for Northwestern.

For the match, Ohio State hit .327 to .171 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes had a 50-41 advantage in kills and a four-to-one edge in ace serves. Northwestern gave up 10 service errors to two for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ohio State had a 50-31 margin in digs with OSU’s Kiel recording a match-high 11 with Main adding 10. At the net, Northwestern had an eight-to-six edge in team blocks. NU’s Aldridge recorded a match-high five blocks with a solo and four assists. OSU’s Main recorded 41 assists in the match while Northwestern’s Jurivich had 36.

Ohio State closes out the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena when they host Illinois (15-14, 6-13).
