COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th ranked Ohio State (20-7, 10-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team defeated Michigan (20-10, 7-10), 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-24) Friday night in Ann Arbor. OSU’s Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) shared match-high honors of 17 points with Michigan’s Lyndsay Miller. Szerszen had 14 kills, one ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks in the victory. Michigan’s Miller posted 13 kills, an ace serve, two solo blocks and two assist blocks. Buckeye Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) added 15 points with 11 kills, an ace serve and six assist blocks. Michigan’s Katie Bruzdzinski contributed 15.5 points with 14 kills and an assist block.

From a 5-5 tie in game one, Michigan with an OSU error and a block by Beth Karpiak took a 7-5 lead. An Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) kill and a Michigan error tied the game at seven. A Meyer-Stevens block, a kill by Stevens and a Meyer-Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) block gave the Buckeyes a 10-7 lead. At 15-13, OSU, a Bruzdzinski kill and a block by Erin Penn tied the game at 15. Michigan, with a Karpiak kill took a 16-15 lead. After ties at 16 and 17, two Michigan errors and kills by Meyer and Szerszen gave the Buckeyes a 21-17 lead. Michigan cut the lead to one at 21-20 with kills from Veronica Rood and Miller and a Miller solo block. A Michigan error and a Meyer ace serve opened a 23-20 Buckeye lead. OSU reached game point on a Michigan error at 29-24. An OSU error made it 29-25. Meyer ended the game with a kill for a 30-25 victory. Ohio State hit .234 for the game to .184 for Michigan.

From a 2-2 tie, Michigan with a Miller kill, blocks by Bruzdzinski-Karpiak and Karpiak-Penn and a Miller ace serve gave Michigan a 6-2 lead. Trailing, 12-9, a kill and block by Szerszen and a Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill tied the game at 12. At 15-all, a Main kill, a Michigan error and kills by McCarthy and Szerszen put Ohio State ahead, 19-15. At 27-20, a Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ont.)-McCarthy block and a Jones kill set game point at 29-20. A Rood kill and an OSU error stopped two game points to make the score, 29-22. A Jones kill closed out the game at 30-22, giving Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .218 for the game to .056 for the Wolverines. Game three saw 10 ties early, the last coming with a Main kill to tie the game at 12. Four Michigan errors gave Ohio State a 16-12 lead. Leading by five at 23-18, two Bruzdzinski kill cut the lead to 23-20. A Jones-McCarthy block and a Bruzdzinski kill moved the score to 24-21. A McCarthy kill and a Michigan error gave OSU a five point lead at 26-21. A block by Karpiak and Penn and an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to three at 26-23. A McCarthy solo block and two assist blocks by Meyer and Stevens set match point at 29-23. A Michigan block by Rood and Karpiak stopped the match point at 29-24. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a kill from Stevens to win the game at 30-24 and the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .163 in the game to .091 for Michigan.

The Buckeyes hit .205 for the match to .108 for the Wolverines. Ohio State had a 52-45 advantage in kills and a two to one edge in ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up four service errors to three for Michigan. Defensively, the Wolverines had a 71-69 advantage in digs with Michigan’s Megan Bower recording a match-high 22 digs with OSU’s Ashley Kiehl (Sr., Allenton, Wis.) collecting a team-high 20. At the net, Michigan had a 13-12 margin in team blocks. Karpiak of the Wolverines recorded a team-high seven blocks with two solos and five assists while Meyer posted six assist blocks for OSU. Each setter, OSU’s Main and Michigan’s Stesha Selsky, recorded 39 assists each.

Ohio State continues on the road Saturday when they play at Michigan State.
