COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 18th-ranked Ohio State (10-5 overall, 3-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind a career-high 28.5 points from Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio), overcame a 2-1 Northwestern (10-6, 1-5) lead for a 3-2 (25-30, 30-21, 24-30, 30-21, 15-10) win Saturday night in Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston. Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) added 21 points in OSU’s come-from-behind victory. Stevens had a match-high 25 kills (.422) adding two ace serves and three assist blocks while Meyer had 14 kills (.310), four ace serves, a solo block and four assist blocks. Northwestern’s Lindsay Anderson recorded a team-high 18.5 points with 16 kills, a solo block and three assist blocks while Brittney Aldridge had 14.5 points on 10 kills (.562) and nine assist blocks.

From 3-3 in game one, Northwestern took the lead with a Julie Purcell kill and two OSU errors for a 6-3 Wildcat margin. Northwestern took the lead to as many as nine and saw OSU cut the margin to four several times before an OSU error ended the game at 30-25, Wildcats. Northwestern hit .282 for the game to .114 for Ohio State.

Ohio State broke a three-all tie in game two with three consecutive blocks to open a 6-3 lead. Meyer and Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) had the first block and Stevens and Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) combined for the other two. OSU held a four-point lead at 14-10 before two OSU errors cut the margin to two at 14-12. OSU responded with four quick points from a Stevens’ kill, a Main-Britenriker block, a Meyer ace serve and a Main kill to open an 18-12 lead. OSU held a 28-17 lead before four Northwestern points cut the lead to 28-21. A Britenriker kill set game point at 29-21 and a Meyer solo block closed out the game at 30-21. The Buckeyes hit .167 in the game to -.026 for Northwestern.

Game three featured 13 ties and six lead changes. With the game tied at 16, an Aldridge kill, a service ace by Lauren Greenwood and an Aldridge-Courtnie Paulus block opened a 19-16 Northwestern lead. At 27-24 Wildcats, a Julie Purcell kill, a Paulus-Aldridge block set game point at 29-24. The Wildcats won the game with an Aldridge kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Northwestern hit .438 for the game to .278 for Ohio State.

Trailing 2-1 in the match, Ohio State broke a three-all tie with back-to-back kills by Stevens to take a 5-3 lead. Northwestern cut the lead to one at 12-11 with an Anderson kill. The Buckeyes responded with a four-point run beginning with a kill from Britenriker. A Britenriker-Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) block, a Main kill and a Wildcat error followed to put Ohio State ahead, 16-11. At 28-21, a Britenriker kill set game point at 29-21. A Northwestern error ended the game, 30-21, to tie the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .486 in the game to .118 for the Wildcats.

Ohio State opened game five with an Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) kill and with her two ace serves took a 3-0 lead. At 8-4, OSU, a Meyer kill and a Rebecca Kastein (Sr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) ace serve gave Ohio State a 10-4 lead. A service ace by OSU’s Meyer set match-point at 14-8. Northwestern, with an Aldridge kill and an OSU error stopped two match points and trailed 14-10. The 25th kill of the match by Stevens ended the game at 15-10 for an OSU 3-2 victory. Ohio State hit .381 in the game to .500 for Northwestern.

For the match, Ohio State hit .288 to .216 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes had a 71-61 margin in kills and a 10-4 advantage in ace serves. Meyer collected a career-tying four ace serves in the match for the Buckeyes. Ohio State gave up nine service errors to seven for Northwestern. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 54-45 margin in digs with OSU’s Brittany Dahms (So., Byron, Ill.) recording a match-high 11. At the net, the Wildcats had a 15 to 12 edge in team blocks. Northwestern’s Aldridge recorded a match-high nine assist blocks for the Wildcats. OSU’s Main recorded 59 assists in the match while Greenwood had 27 and Stephanie Jurivich, 22 for Northwestern.

Ohio State returns to St. John Arena next weekend to host Michigan State (9-7, 2-4) Friday and Michigan (9-6, 3-3) Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
