Colorado State (No. 18 AP/No. 16 USA Today/ESPN) advanced to the championship game of the Women’s Sports Foundation Classic tonight without the aid of its leading scorer and point guard Elizabeth English, downing Xavier 65-48 in first round action in Value City Arena.
English tore her right ACL less than two minutes into the game. Another starter, forward Katie Borton, left the game with 11:15 left in the first half with a possible tear to her right knee.
Xavier only trailed by five at the half, 30-25, despite 17 turnovers.
Colorado State made its adjustments after intermission, scoring the first 11 points of the second half to take a 41-25 lead with 16:48 remaining and never looked back.
Forward Ashley Augspurger led four other teammates in double-figure scoring with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Forward Jackie Campbell scored 14 off 66.7 percent (6-of-9) shooting from the floor. Guard Angie Gorton and forward Lisa Narkiewicz posted 11 points each.
Guard Shavon Bell led Xavier with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Colorado State, 7-1 overall, will play the winner of the Ohio State-Louisville contest in the championship game Saturday at 8 p.m. Xavier, 4-5, will play in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
