COLUMBUS, Ohio – – The No. 17 Ohio State men’s tennis team fell, 6-1, to fourth-ranked Georgia Sunday in Athens, Ga. With the loss, the Buckeyes fell to 3-3 this season and the Bulldogs improved to 4-0. Ohio State split weekend action against Southeastern Conference foes, as it defeated No. 19 Arkansas, 5-2, Feb. 11 in Columbus. Against Georgia, sophomore Devin Mullings captured the lone point in singles for the Buckeyes.

Georgia swept Ohio State on all three courts to claim the crucial doubles point. The junior duo of Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales), the No. 1 doubles pair in the country, suffered their first loss this season. Georgia’s 10th-ranked tandem of John Isner and Antonio Ruiz topped Green and Wilson, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Green and Wilson hold a 12-1 overall mark this season.

The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point as Buckeyes Dennis Mertens (Braaschaat, Belgium/Koninkiljk) and freshman Drew Eberly (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) fell, 8-4, on the No. 3 court to Ricardo Gonzalez and Matic Omerzel. Joey Atas (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Chris Klingemann (Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent), ranked No. 28, closed out the doubles portion with an 8-4 loss to No. 20 Strahinja Bobusic and Colin Purcell. In singles action, the No. 4 court finished first as Mertens fell to Bobusic, 6-4, 6-1. The Bulldogs went up, 3-0, in the match score as No. 28 Omerzel topped Buckeye Klingemann, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 3 slot.

Mullings captured the lone point for the Buckeyes as he defeated Ruiz, 7-6, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. Georgia clinched the match win at the No. 2 position as No. 18 Isner defeated No. 67 Atas in three sets, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6.

The Buckeyes return to action Thursday-Sunday at the National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago. Ohio State received a team bid to the championship for the first time in program history. The 16-team field includes defending national champion Baylor, Big Ten foe Illinois, Boise State, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Harvard, Kentucky, Louisiana State, Mississippi, Oklahoma State, Southern California, Stanford, UCLA and Virginia. The Buckeyes are back at home Feb. 25 against Virginia Commonwealth.
