COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team remained undefeated (13-0, 3-0 Big Ten) with a 3-1 (30-24, 30-23, 18-30, 30-24) upset victory over No. 1 Minnesota (13-2, 2-1) Friday night in St. John Arena. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored 39 points in the match with a match-high 36 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks. She added 12 digs and two assists in the contest. Also in double-figure points for the Buckeyes were Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) with 16.5 (14 kills, 2 aces, 1 assist block) and Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) with 10.5 (nine kills and three assist blocks). Minnesota’s Erin Martin scored a team-high 19.5 points with19 kills and an assist block. Trisha Bratford had 16 points (14 kills, 2 solo blocks) and Kelly Bowman added 13 (12 kills, 2 assist blocks).

Ohio State opened game one with three consecutive kills from Gordon. The Buckeyes held a 19-14 lead when a Bowman kill and two OSU errors cut the lead to two at 19-17. Leading 22-20, a Stevens kill and two Gopher errors opened a 25-20 Buckeye lead. At 28-23, Gordon’s kill set game point at 29-23. Martin, with a kill, held off the game point, but Gordon’s 10th kill of the game finished the game at 30-24. The Buckeyes hit .313 for the game to .205 for Minnesota.

The Buckeyes opened game two with the first six points from three Gopher errors, a block by Meyer and Gordon, a Gordon kill and an ace serve by Rebecca Kastein (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.). Minnesota came back to tie the game at nine on an OSU error. Kills by Stevens and Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) returned the lead to OSU at 11-9. A Jessica Byrnes kill cut the margin to 11-10, but a Stevens ace, a Gordon kill and a Minnesota error put OSU ahead, 14-10. Leading, 28-21, a Gordon kill set game point at 29-21. Two OSU errors cut the lead to 29-23. Nicole Britenriker’s (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill closed out the game at 30-23 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .286 for the game to .156 for Minnesota. OSU’s Gordon contributed 11 kills in the game.

Tied at one in game three, A Meredith Nelson kill and an OSU error gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead which they held for the game, winning 30-23. The Gophers hit .500 in the game to .118 for Ohio State.

With game four tied at three, kills by Stevens and Gordon gave OSU a 5-3 lead. At 5-4, kills by Gordon and Main and an ace by Kastein opened an 8-4 Buckeye lead. Ohio State held an 18-13 lead when a Bratford kill, a block by Byrnes and Lindsey Taatjes and two OSU errors cut the lead to 18-17. At 19-18, a Meyer kill and two ace serves from Gordon opened the lead to 22-18. At 25-22, a Buckeye error cut the lead to two at 25-23. Ohio State finished the game with a 5-1 run to win the match starting with a Stevens kill. Gordon scored two kills to make it 28-23 but a Bowman kill cut the margin to 28-24. Gordon closed out the match with two more kills to secure the game at 30-24, winning the match, 3-1. The Buckeyes hit .372 in the game to .310 for Minnesota. OSU’s Gordon, for the third game out of four, scored double-figure kills (11) in the game.

For the match Minnesota out hit the Buckeyes, .284 to .281. The Buckeyes had a 73-60 advantage in kill and had a nine to one margin in ace serves. OSU gave up 10 service errors to five for the Gophers. Defensively, Ohio State had a 61-52 advantage in digs with Minnesota’s Paula Gentil recording a match-high 24. At the net, Minnesota had a 7 to 5.5 margin in team blocks. UM’s Nelson had a match-high four assist blocks. OSU’s Main collected 65 assists in the match while Minnesota’s Bowman and Taatjes each had 27.

Ohio State returns to action Saturday when they host Iowa at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
