COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team finds itself at the top of the Big Ten standings after a 3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 30-27) Buckeye home win over Iowa (9-6, 1-3 Big Ten). Ohio State (14-0, 4-0) stands alone in first place after co-leader and fourth-ranked Penn State (12-1, 3-1) lost 3-2, at home, to No. 1 Minnesota (14-2, 3-1) tonight. Minnesota fell from the unbeaten ranks in the Big Ten Friday when they lost 3-1 to Ohio State. Leading Ohio State against Iowa was Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) with 15.5 points on a match-high 14 kills, a solo and an assist block. Buckeye Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) produced 13 points with 12 kills and an ace serve while Nicole Britenriker (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) added 11 with nine kills and four assist blocks. Iowa’s Carolyn Giese scored a team-high 14.5 points for the Hawkeyes with 12 kills and five assist blocks. Stacy Vitali contributed 12 points with nine kills and six assist blocks.

Iowa opened game one with a Giese kill. Buckeye kills by Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Stevens and a Hawkeye error gave OSU a 3-1 lead. Ohio State opened a five points lead at 10-5 but at 15-12, two OSU errors and a Justeen Patton kill tied the game at 15. OSU regained the lead (16-15) with a Gordon kill. At 17-16, kills by Stevens and Gordon and a solo block by Gordon opened a 20-16 Ohio State lead. Leading 27-24, a Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) kill, a Gordon-Britenriker block and a Hawkeye error ended the game at 30-24. Ohio State hit .222 for the game to .070 for Iowa. After several early ties in game two, Ohio State held a 20-15 lead. With OSU leading, 23-20, a Buckeye error and an Iowa block by Vitali and Giese tied the game at 23. After ties at 25 and 26, an Iowa error gave OSU a 27-26 lead. Kills by Gordon and Main set game point at 29-26. A Giese kill stopped the first game point at 29-27, but a Gordon kill ended the game at 30-27. The Buckeyes hit .261 for the game to .243 for Iowa.

Game three saw Ohio State take an early 10-6 lead and open a seven point lead at 24-17. Iowa cut the lead to five at 25-20 but two Hawkeye errors and a Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) kill made it 28-20. A Stevens kill set match point at 29-22 but Iowa would score five consecutive points to cut the lead to two at 29-27. A Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.)-Britenriker block ended the match with a 30-27 game three win. Ohio State hit .250 in the game to Iowa’s .152.

For the match, Ohio State hit .246 to Iowa’s .151. The Buckeyes had a 57-41 advantage in kills while each squad had a single ace serve. OSU had eight service errors to 11 for Iowa. Defensively, Ohio State had a 57-49 advantage in digs with Hawkeye Pam Kavadas recording a match-high 24. At the net, Iowa had a 10.5 to eight margin in team blocks. Iowa’s Vitali recorded a match-high six assist blocks. Ohio State’s Main had 45 assists in the match with Hawkeye Patton recording 31.

Ohio State will have road matches next week with contests at Indiana Oct. 8 and at Purdue Oct. 9.
