COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State (6-6, Big Ten 0-3) women’s volleyball team lost a tough five-game decision to 22nd-ranked Michigan State (10-3, 2-1) Friday night in Jenison field house. A crowd of 1,406 saw the Spartans score the final three points of the match to capture a 30-27, 23-30, 30-28, 26-30, 17-15 victory. The win did not come easy as OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) produced a career-high 36 kills for the Buckeyes and added a match-high 17 digs. Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) added 11 kills and Suzie Stiling, 10 for Ohio State. MSU’s Jenny Rood (Jr., Ada, Mich.) scored a team-high 19 kills for the Spartans with Kyla Smith (Sr., Comox, British Columbia) adding 17 and Angela Morley (Sr., Holland, Mich.) and Kim Schram (So., London, Ontario) 10 each.

Michigan State took the early lead in game one and held a 20-15 lead before a six-point Buckeye run put the Ohio State ahead, 21-20. The run contained two kills by Gordon, two MSU errors, a block by Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Draeger and a kill by Draeger. With OSU leading 23-22, four Buckeye errors opened up a 26-23 Spartan lead. A Brie Hagerty (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) kill and a Draeger ace serve cut the lead to 26-25. A Buckeye service error made it 27-25. Stiling’s kill cut the lead to 27-26. A Michelle Kopka (So., Scarborough, Ontario) kill and a Buckeye error set game point for Michigan State at 29-26. Gordon cut the margin to 29-27, but a Morley kill ended the game at 30-27 for the Spartans. Michigan State hit .294 for the game to .199 for the Buckeyes.

OSU’s Gordon scored kills for the Buckeyes first five points and along with three Spartan errors gave Ohio State an 8-2 lead. Michigan State responded with five consecutive points to cut the margin to 8-7. A Draeger kill made it 9-7 but a Schram kill and a solo block by Morley tied the game at nine. Two Spartan errors and a Stiling kill put Ohio State ahead, 12-9. Michigan State closed to 16-14, but a Higgins kill, a Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) ace serve and a MSU error pushed the lead to five at 19-14. The Buckeyes continued to expand the lead to nine at 27-18. At 28-22, a Gordon kill set game point at 29-22. An OSU error cut the margin to 29-23 but a Draeger kill ended the game at 30-23, tying the match at one game each. OSU hit .268 for the game to .100 for Michigan State.

Game three opened with nine ties putting the score at 16-all. A MSU service error and two blocks by Higgins and Schardt made it 19-16, OSU. A Kopka kill made it 19-17. A Gordon kill and a block by Higgins and Draeger gave OSU a four-point lead at 21-17. Michigan State tied the game at 21 off three Buckeye errors and a Morley kill. A MSU error and a Morley kill made it 22-all. A Spartan error, a Draeger kill, a block by Stiling and Hagerty and a Gordon put OSU ahead, 26-22. Michigan State responded with a Rood kill, an ace serve by Morley and with two OSU errors, tied the game at 26. OSU took a 27-26 lead with a Stiling kill. Schram’s kill and an OSU error put the Spartans ahead, 28-27. A Spartan error tied the game at 28. OSU’s next serve was long to set game point at 29-28 and a Buckeye hitting error ended the game at 30-28 giving MSU a 2-1 game lead. Michigan State hit .175 for the game to .056 for the Buckeyes.

Leading 6-5 in game four, Michigan State opened a 9-5 lead off two OSU errors and a Morley kill. A Draeger kill cut the margin to 9-6. Michigan State, with two kills from Morley, one from Schram, blocks from Kopka and Morley and Morley and Schram and an ace serve from Nikki Colson (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) opened up a 15-6 lead. A Gordon kill stopped the run, making it 15-7. With Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa) serving, the Buckeyes scored seven consecutive points to close the margin to 15-14. Six points were from Spartan errors with Gordon collecting a kill. MSU made it 16-14 with a Morley kill. A Gordon kill, a MSU error and a block by Higgins and Schardt gave OSU a 17-16 lead. The teams exchanged points until a 23-all tie. A Stiling kill and a block by Stiling and Gordon gave OSU a 25-23 lead. A Schram kill cut the margin to 25-24. A kill by Schardt and one from Higgins gave OSU a 27-24 lead. Kills by MSU’s Smith and OSU’s Gordon moved the score to 28-25. A Rood kill cut the lead to 28-26, but Gordon responded with a kill and then an ace serve to close out the game at 30-26 and tied the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .357 for the game to .146 for the Spartans.

The 15-point game five began with a 2-0 Spartan lead off two OSU errors. Kills by Stiling and Gordon and a Stiling ace serve made it 3-2, Ohio State. Tied at five-all, a Colson kill put MSU ahead 6-5. OSU kills by Hagerty and Draeger gave OSU a 7-6 lead. A Rood kill and two OSU errors gave Michigan State a 9-7 lead. A MSU error and a Hagerty kill moved the score to10-8. Two kills by Gordon and a block by Stiling and Schardt gave Ohio State an 11-10 lead. A Schram kill, a Buckeye error and an ace serve by Colson put the Spartans ahead, 13-11. Kills by Stiling and Gordon tied the game at 13. A Morley and Schram block gave MSU a 14-13 lead and serving match point. Two Spartan errors put OSU ahead, 15-14 and serving match point. A Morley kill tied the game at 15. A block by Smith and Rood gave MSU a 16-15 lead and serving its second match point. A Buckeye error closed out the game at 17-15 for Michigan State, giving the Spartans a 3-2 victory. The Spartans hit .105 for the game to .040 for the Buckeyes.

For the match, Ohio State hit .199 to .167 for the Spartans. OSU had a 70-63 advantage in kills. The Buckeyes served up nine aces to five for Michigan State. OSU’s Higgins and Schardt collected a match-high three aces each. The Buckeyes gave up 15 service errors to 12 for the Spartans. OSU had a 71-63 margin in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a match-high 17 with Stiling adding 16 and Draeger 12. MSU’s Emmy Miller (Jr., Okemos, Mich.) recorded a team-high 16 digs with Smith adding 12 and Colson 11. The Spartans had a 20-13 advantage in blocking with MSU’s Morley recording a match-high 12 total blocks off two solos and 10 assists. OSU’s Higgins had a team-high seven assist blocks. At setter, OSU’s Schardt posted a match and career-high 62 assists after missing the last three contests with a concussion. MSU’s Colson had 52 assists.

Ohio State travels to Michigan for a 7 p.m. contest Sunday.

OHIO STATE NOTES:

Stacey Gordon: Career-high 36 kills. Previous high was 33 at Illinois-Chicago (9-10-02). Gordon has had double-figure kills in her last 28 consecutive matches and in 41 of 43 career matches. She has 17 matches with 20 or more kills and has three with 30 or more. Gordon has had 23 or more kills in six of her last seven matches. Her 36 kills ranks in a four-way tie for third in OSU match records. She is tied with Anne Botica, at Iowa (11-24-01), Rosie Snow, Purdue (10-31-98) and Vanessa Wouters, at Notre Dame (12-8-96. Wouters has OSU’s top two matches with 45 kills at Iowa (11-22-96) and 39 kills against Penn State (10-16-96). Gordon tied the MSU’s Jenison Field House kills record with Michigan State’s Veronica Morales vs. Penn State (11-5-94).

Jackie Schardt: After missing the last three matches with a concussion, she returned to action and recorded a career-high 62 assists. She also produced a career-high five assist blocks.

Shelly Draeger: Equaled her season-high of 11 kills.

Stephanie Higgins: Equaled her career-high of seven assist blocks and had a career-high three ace serves.

Suzie Stiling: Recorded a season-high six assist blocks.

Ohio State: The Buckeyes have started the 2002 Big Ten season 0-3. The last time OSU lost the first three conference matches was 1997. The Buckeyes lost to Penn State 3-0, Indiana 3-1 and at Minnesota 3-0. OSU then won 3-0 at Iowa.
