Box Score

Miami, Fla.-Kristi DeVries (Jr., Corona, Calif.) pitched five solid innings and Meghan Rowlands (So., Hilliard, Ohio) scored twice as the No. 16 Ohio State softball team earned its first win of the season with a 4-1 win over Florida International Friday at the Golden Panther Invitational in Miami, Fla. DeVries allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four batters to earn the win and freshman Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio) pitched the final two shutout innings to earn the save. The win improved Ohio State to 1-1 while FIU drops to 2-5.

Just as the earlier game against FAU, the Buckeyes got on the board first. Jennifer Link (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to third when Karisa Evans (So., Franklin, Ohio) grounded out to second. DeVries then drove home Link on a single to center field to give OSU the early 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Panthers would answer in the bottom half of the first inning when Cynthia Turek singled up the middle, scoring Nicole Dubovik from second to tie the game at 1-1. DeVries then struck out FIU’s Jennifer Owens to end the first.

The Buckeyes wasted no time answering in the second inning, scoring twice more. After Rowlands walked and stole second Rogeanna Hottinger (Sr., Newark, Ohio) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Rowlands then stole third base and scored on an errant thrown by FIU catcher Kristen Perry. Beth McAbier (Jr., Carrollton, Ohio) would then ground out to second, advancing Hottinger to third before scoring on Link’s single through the left side, giving OSU a 3-1 lead. The Buckeyes would tack on an insurance run in the top of the fourth. Rowlands started the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on an error by FIU left fielder Meagan Dontrich. McAbier then delivered an RBI single down the right field line to score Rowlands from second to give OSU a 4-1 lead.

The Buckeyes will be back at it again beginning tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. The remainder of the tournament will be decided by seeding and bracket play.
