COLUMBUS, Ohio – Curtis Smith scored three goals and added two assists, as the No. 16 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team beat Air Force, 9-3, in Great Western Lacrosse League action Sunday in front of 766 fans in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Anthony Gilardi had a team-high three assists in the game and also scored a goal.

The victory improves the Buckeyes’ record to 8-4 overall and moves their conference record to 2-1. The Falcons fall to 3-7 on the season, 1-3 in GWLL play.

Ohio State outscored Air Force, 5-1, in the first half. In the opening quarter, Curtis Smith (Jr., Victoria, British Columbia/Oak Bay) scored the first of his three goals on the day at 12:11. Bryan Mulford (Jr., Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) pushed the OSU lead to 2-0 with 4:48 remaining in the quarter with an unassisted goal.

The Buckeyes scored the first three goals of the second quarter, including back-to-back scores by Curtis Smith at 8:25 and 7:00. Mike Norton (Jr., Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) took a pass from Gilardi and scored at 3:29 with the Buckeyes on the extra-man opportunity. The Falcons got on the board with an extra-man goal of their own at 2:02, as Kevin Hill scored on a rebound.

Air Force scored two goals less than a minute apart in the third quarter to cut OSU’s lead to two, 5-3. Matt Dudderar scored at 6:59, followed by an extra-man goal at 6:00 by Bill Keleher. The Buckeyes responded with a goal just over 1:30 later to regain their three-goal lead, as Ryan Laffey (So., Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) converted a Norton pass at 4:29. OSU went up, 7-3, with 1:57 left in the third quarter when Tom Randisi (Fr., Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) scored an extra-man goal, off a pass from Gilardi. Ohio State scored the only goals of the fourth quarter. Gilardi scored a goal of his own at 13:54, assisted by Curtis Smith, and Pat Donohue (Jr., West Babylon, N.Y./ West Babylon) ended the scoring, converting a Smith pass with Ohio State on the extra-man opportunity with 10:33 left on the clock.

The win marked the second consecutive game Ohio State allowed four goals or less. OSU’s Tony Russo (So., Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) started the game in goal, playing 57:33. He allowed three goals while making six saves. Jon Miller (So., Corning, N.Y./Corning East) played the last 2:27, making three saves while holding the Falcons scoreless.

“This was a good win for us,” Joe Breschi, OSU head coach, said. “Once we figured out their zone we started to make things happen offensively. Once again our defense played a terrific game.

The Buckeyes return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday, as they close out their home schedule against GWLL foe Butler in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
