COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (8-3 overall, 1-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team was upset by Virginia Tech (6-7), 16-14, Saturday afternoon at Moseley Field in Blacksburg, Va. OSU’s Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Virginia) scored a game-high five goals for the Buckeyes with Lauren Cochran (Sr., Coatesville, Pa.) and Reginal Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) adding three goals each and single goals from Carrie Weatherill (So., Malvern, Pa.), Shannon Wilson (Jr., Sherkston, Ontario), and Kylee Reade (Sr., London, Ontario). Virginia Tech’s Kate Threadgold (So., Largs Bay, Australia) had a team-high four goals for the Hokies with Lindsey Welch (So., Englewood, Colo.) and Hilary Fay (So., Medford, N.J.) adding three goals each. Lauren Kenney (Jr., Clifton, Va.) and Katie Madden (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.) added two goals each with Lisa Tsimbidis (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) and Samantha Sybert (Jr., Reston, Va.) contributing single goals.
OSU’s Oliver opened the scoring at 1:06. The Hokies countered with goals by Welch (2:03) and Kenney (3:35), the later assisted by Welch. Mirick tied the game at two at 7:57. The Buckeyes took a 3-2 lead with a Lauren Cochran goal at 8:11, assisted by Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.). Virginia Tech responded with two scores from Tsimbidis (12:17) and Madden (14:41) to take a 4-3 lead. OSU tied the game at four with a Wilson goal at 16:29. Threadgold gave the Hokies a 5-4 lead at 17:09. Oliver’s second goal tied the game at five. Virginia Tech took a two-goal lead with scores from Fay (21:09) and Welch (22:57). Mirick’s second goal cut the Hokie lead to one (7-6) at 23:16. With goals by Sybert (24:35) and Threadgold (28:16), Virginia Tech opened up a 9-3 lead. OSU cut the lead to 9-7 with Cochran’s second goal at 29:54 to end the first half.
Virginia Tech opened the second half with a Threadgold score at 30:49 to take a 10-7 lead. OSU made it, 10-8, with a Lauren Cochran goal at 31:12. Fay’s goal made the lead three again at 32:09. Mirick cut the lead to two with her third goal at 35:27. The Hokies took a 12-9 lead with a Welch goal at 36:25. The Buckeyes cut the margin to within one goal with scores by Mirick (37:18) and Weatherill (39:43), making the score, 12-11. Virginia Tech again took the lead to three (14-11) with goals by Fay (44:28) and Madden (52:32). OSU’s Reade scored at 52:54 to make the lead, 14-12. Each squad would score two more goals, Kenney (53:59) and Threadgold (55:54) for Virginia Tech and Oliver (54:58) and Mirick (58:41) for Ohio State as the Hokies won 16-14.
Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) had eight saves in goal for Ohio State while VT’s Jamie McGraw (So., Annapolis, Md.) recorded 19 for the Hokies.
Ohio State returns to American Lacrosse Conference action next week when the Buckeyes travel to Vanderbilt for a 1 p.m., Sunday, April 21 contest.
