COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (20-12 overall) men’s volleyball team lost 3-0 (30-24, 30-23, 30-23) to No. 8 Loyola (23-6) in the semifinals of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament semifinals hosted by Loyola. OSU’s Mark Greaves (Sr., Fenton, Mo.) and Andy Cole (Sr., Glendale, Wis.) shared team-high honors with 9.5 points each. Greaves recorded nine kills and an assist block while Cole had eight kills and three assist blocks. Loyola’s Chris Kozlarek posted a match-high 24.5 points for the Ramblers with Joe Guntli adding 14.5 Kozlarek had 23 kills and three assist blocks while Guntli had nine kills, four ace serves and three assist blocks.

Tied at four in game one, a Corey Kloos kill and a Joe Guntli ace serve put Loyola ahead for the game at 6-4. The Ramblers won the game, 30-24, with a Chris Nelson kill. Loyola hit .500 for the game to .310 for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State with a Cole kill, a Rambler error and a Cole-John Albertson (So./Fr., Manchester, Mo.) took a 3-0 lead. Loyola responded with kills from Brian Guntli and Joe Guntli and an OSU error to tie the game at three. At six-all, two OSU errors gave Loyola an 8-6 lead. The Ramblers won the game, 30-23 off an OSU error. Loyola hit .200 in the game to .000 for Ohio State.

Game three saw Loyola lead, 4-3, before a Cole kill tied the game at four. Rambler kills by Joe Guntli and Corey Kloos made it 6-4 Loyola. At 16-13, Loyola, a Rambler error and a Robbie Klein (So./Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill cut the lead to one at 16-15. A Kloos kill and two Ohio State errors opened a 19-15 Loyola lead. The Ramblers would win the game, 30-23 on a Joe Guntli ace serve to win the match, 3-0. Loyola hit .275 for the game to .189 for Ohio State. For the match, Loyola hit .319 to .154 for the Buckeyes. The Ramblers had a 55 to 34 advantage in kills and a 5-2 margin in ace serves. Loyola gave up 16 service errors to nine for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Loyola had a 46-40 margin in digs. Rambler John Thuet had a match-high 14 digs. Ohio State had a nine to eight advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Layne Dreven (Sr./Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a match-high five assist blocks for the Buckeyes. Setter Brian Guntli collected a match-high 47 assists while OSU’s Daniel Mathews (So., Shorewood, Wis.) recorded 25.

The Ramblers advance to the MIVA Tournament Championship match Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. They will face IPFW (22-6), who defeated Ball State (21-7), 3-2 (25-30, 30-24, 30-28, 19-30, 15-13) in the first semifinal. The Championship match will be carried live by CSTV.
