COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (4-4 overall, 0-2 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team lost a 3-1 (35-33, 30-20, 30-32, 30-25) decision to No. 14 IPFW Friday night in the Gates Sports Center. OSU’s Andy Cole (So., Glendale, Wis.) scored a team-high 22 points for the Buckeyes with 20 kills and two ace serves. Ohio State’s Mark Greaves (So., Fenton, Mo.) added 15.5 points (11 kills, three aces, three assist blocks), Adam Pedersen (Sr., Muskego, Wis.) 12.5 (11 k, 1 sb, 1 ab) and Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) 11 (11 k). For the Mastodons, Matt Zbyszewski had a match-high 34.5 points with 28 kills, two ace serves, two solo blocks and five block assists. Serdar Sikca contributed 13.5 points (6 k, 1 as, 1 sb, 11 ab).

Ohio State held early leads in game one. The Mastodons tied the game at 18. Tied at 27, an IPFW error and a block by Scott Spurlock (Jr., Stow, Ohio) and Greaves gave Ohio State a 29-27 lead. A kill by Issac White and a block by Sikca and Zbyszewski tied the game at 29. The scored advanced to 32-all. A Sikca ace serve put IPFW up, 33-32. A Pedersen kill tied the game at 33. The Mastodons closed out the game with back-to-back kills by Zbyszewski to win game one, 35-33. IPFW hit .318 in the game to .282 for Ohio State.

In game two from a five-all tie, IPFW out scored Ohio State 10-4 to open a 15-9 lead. The Buckeyes closed to 15-12 but would come no closer as the Mastodons won the game, 30-20. IPFW hit .250 in the game to -.176 for the Buckeyes.

IPFW held a 10-7 lead in game three. Buckeye kills by Pedersen, Wauligman and Greaves tied the game at ten. After several lead changes, OSU tied the game at 26 with a kill by Wauligman. Kills by Greaves and Cole gave OSU a 28-26 advantage. A Mitch Dreisbach kill and an OSU error tied the game at 28. Kills by Pedersen and Zbyszewski made it 29-all. An IPFW service error and a Zbyszewski kill tied the game at 30. Cole’s kill gave OSU a 31-30 lead. His next kill gave OSU a 32-30 win in game three. The Mastodons hit .400 in the game to .385 for Ohio State.

From an eight-all tie, each squad made short runs. Ohio State held a 17-16 lead when IPFW made a 9-0 run to open a 25-17 lead. OSU cut the margin to 25-20 with kills by Cole and Greaves and an IPFW error. At 28-22, kills by Cole and Spurlock cut the lead to four at 28-24. A Zbyszewski kill set match point for IPFW at 29-24. Both team recorded service errors to end the game at 30-25, giving the Mastodons a 3-1 win. IPFW hit .188 for the game to .000 for the Buckeyes.

For the match, IPFW hit .298 to OSU’s .133. The Buckeyes had a 62-61 advantage in kills and had a seven to five margin in ace serves. OSU’s Greaves had a match-high three aces for the Buckeyes. The Mastodons gave up 16 service errors to 12 for the Buckeyes. Defensively, OSU had a 38-33 lead in digs. OSU’s Wauligman recorded a match-high 10 digs. At the net, the Mastodons recorded a match-high 29 team blocks to OSU’s six. IPFW’s Mike Daiga had a match-high 13 total blocks with three solos and 10 assists. Buckeye Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario) had a match-high 55 assists in the contest with IPFW’s Dennis Santiago recording 49.

OHIO STATE MATCH NOTES:

Ricardo Garcia recorded his first ace serve of the season against IPFW.

Mark Peckham equaled his season-high of nine digs that he previously set against Brigham Young (Jan. 24). He also recorded his first solo block of the season.

Adam Pedersen recorded his second solo block of the season. His first was at Lewis.

Scott Spurlock recorded his first ace serve of the season.

Andy Cole collected a season-high three assists against IPFW. His two ace serves equaled his career high for the fourth time.

Mike Wauligman’s 10 digs was a season-high. He previously recorded six, twice, the last against D’Youville.
