COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (5-4 overall, 1-2 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team picked up its first win in the MIVA with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-17, 30-25) win over Clarke (1-3, 0-3) Saturday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Mark Greaves (So., Fenton, Mo.) and Ricardo Garcia (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) scored 15 and 14 points respectively in leading Ohio State to the victory. Greaves had 12 kills along with two ace serves and two assist blocks for his points while Garcia recorded a match-high 13 kills and added two assist blocks. Crusader Cody Chamberlain scored a team-high 10.5 points for Clarke with 10 kills and an assist block.

With Ohio State leading 5-4 in game one, the Buckeyes produced a 7-3 run to take a 12-7 lead. Two OSU errors cut the margin to 12-9. An OSU kill by Adam Pedersen (Sr., Muskego, Wis.) and two Crusader errors made it 15-9, OSU. The Buckeyes built a 26-16 lead and saw Greaves score OSU’s final four points for a 30-17 win. The Buckeyes hit .367 for the game to Clarke’s .028.

After nine lead changes in game two, Clarke broke a 10-all tie with a kill by Pat McCarthy to take an 11-10 lead. A 7-0 run by Ohio State began with kills by Greaves and Layne Dreven (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed by a Clarke error for a 13-11 lead. The run continued with an ace serve by Brett Hamilton (Jr., Rockville, Md.), a block by Dreven and Garcia, a kill by Dreven and a block by Dreven and Greaves for a 17-11 lead. A Garcia kill and two Buckeye errors along with an Erik Vogt kill made it 18-14 Buckeyes. Kills by Dreven and Garcia and back-to-back ace serves by Greaves made it 22-14. OSU outscored Clarke, 8-3, to close out the game at 30-17. Ohio State hit .303 for the game to .034 for the Crusaders. Ohio State, with a 3-2 lead in game three, scored six straight points to open a 9-2 lead. The run contained two kills each from Garcia and Ryan Underwood (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) and two Crusader errors. A 5-1 run by Clarke cut the margin to 9-7 with kills by Tyler Galstad and Jeff Simundic and two OSU errors. Clarke trailed 18-15 when a Simundic kill cut the lead to two at 18-16. Buckeye kills by Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario) and Underwood made it 20-16. An OSU error, a Buckeye kill by Garcia and a Clarke kill from Chamberlain made it 21-18, OSU. Kills from Underwood and Garcia and a Crusader error made it 24-18. Clarke cut into the lead with an ace serve by Vogt, a Chamberlain kill and an OSU error to make it 24-21. A Clarke error and a Greaves kill made it 26-21. A Buckeye serving error and Aaron Herbst kill cut the lead to three at 26-23. Kills by Dreven and Matt Bledig moved the score to 27-24. A Greaves kill and an OSU service error made it 28-25. A Dreven kill and a block by Peckham and Underwood ended the game at 30-25. Ohio State hit .455 in the game to .154 for Clarke.

For the match, Ohio State hit .375 to Clarke’s .066. The Buckeyes had a 50-29 margin in kills and a 6-3 advantage in ace serves. OSU’s Peckham and Greaves and Clarke’s Herbst each recorded two ace serves in the match. Ohio State gave up 12 point on service errors to nine for the Crusaders. The Buckeyes had a 30-27 margin in digs with Clarke’s Chamberlain and OSU’s Peckham sharing match-high honors with seven each. At the net, Ohio State had a 5.5 to 3 advantage in team blocks. Five players shared match-high honors. Clarke’s Vogt had a solo and an assist as did OSU’s Peckham. Buckeyes Greaves, Garcia and Dreven each produced two assist blocks. OSU’s Peckham had 35 assists in the match while Clarke’s Bledig had 18 and Galstad added eight.

Ohio State continues MIVA league play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when they host Mercyhurst in St. John Arena. It is the second of the three-match home stand. OSU will face Loyola Saturday at 7 pm. in St. John Arena.

OHIO STATE GAME NOTES:

Ohio State played 12 players in the match with only starters Mark Peckham, Mark Greaves and libero Dan Meske playing all three games.

Ricardo Garcia had a match-high 13 kills and hit a season-high .429 on 21 attempts with four errors.

Ryan Underwood played in his second match of the season scoring three kills in five attempts (.400) adding an ace serve and an assist block.

Mark Greaves hit .429 for the match on 12 kills, three errors in 21 attempts. That equaled his career-high .429 (12-3-21) against Concordia in 2003.

Adam Pedersen scored his first ace of the season (11th of his career).

Layne Dreven had a career-high six kills against Clarke. His previous high was four, in four matches.
